I think what was being implied is if your insurance company don't ask if your car is impounded and your policy says nothing about any restrictions on impounded cars then there is no reason to inform your insurance company of it, or for the police to check if you have.

But - in that situation it doesn't really matter because when / if the police ring up the insurer, the insurer has no grounds to tell the police anything other than "yes- it's insured and the policy is valid".

If your insurance company is stating that you do have insurance and there are no clauses on your policy about not being covered when retrieving the vehicle from police impound and your insurance company doesn't ask about it i can't understand why you wouldn't be insured.

I don't think anyone has said that you wouldn't be insured in those circumstances.

The jist of the OP's problem is that many insurers specifically ask about whether the vehicle is impounded, when you buy the policy.

If you say yes - they won't offer insurance

If you lie and say NO, and get a certificate; it would appear that the police in this case would still not release the car because when they checked with the insurer, the insurer would probably tell them that it didn't cover the car, and would probably cancel the policy.

Whether they should go as far as that in checking insurance is debatable, but it should suffice to say that some people who drive without insurance wouldn't think twice about knocking up a forged certificate in an attempt to reclaim their car and avoid prosecution, or lying to an insurance company to get a "genuine" (but ultimately invalid) policy, so I'm comfortable with it. Others may find it overly intrusive or suspicious.

    many?

Assuming you are talking about normal annual policies I don't remember ever being asked.

    Which ones do ask?

I haven't checked myself, but the first post in this thread (now very old) states:

Fairly sure it's been asked for the last few policies I've taken out.

This is niggling me, as above and talking about annual polices I've never been asked and the only reference I've ever seen is that my DOC cover can't be used to recover impounded cars.

So far as I can see Aviva don't ask or mention it in their policy, neither do Prestige nor any of the comparison sites I've looked at.

I'm leaning toward the OP volunteering the info unasked which is always a bad idea.

As always, happy to be corrected if anyone has links or hard knowledge

Prestige did. 100% sure of that. Paperwork also mentions it.

Maybe they do offer insurance for that but to lower the costs for the quote
    excluded it?

Or maybe its the company that came out cheaper for me?

maybe it's changed because their current quotes system certainly doesn't mention it

I phoned them. Using a number on a Ford Forum. Maybe its just one way they can reduce the premium or charge extra to release an impounded vehicle?

Sidenote: Are Prestige any good though?
