Ooh, is this like a dieting support thread? I've missed something I think as I was busy actually working yesterday and today instead of sneaking on MSE.
I've been trying to start dieting again for the last few weeks and have given up as I think it's quite hard to diet and be on a strict shopping budget. So now I've decided to exercise instead.
I went out for an hours walk yesterday lunchtime, and did 10 minutes on my trampette today.
I've been looking into doing the Marathon with my hubby, but its a lot of hard work, but not only that, a lot of time needs to be put into training, so now I'm going to investigate the training for a half marathon. The other downside to running is the set up costs, we don't have suitable trainers/clothes, so will need to spend some money.
Otherwise, we'll do the London to Brighton Bike ride again (did this in 2004 and swore I'd never do it again).
I find I need a goal to aim for. Anybody else considering doing anything like this?0 -
That's why we needed our own DFW dieters support group HH.
The other thread is full of lovely people, but they recommend buying books, or joining clubs. We need to do this on a budget. Is it better to aim for the stars and hit a tree or aim for a tree and land in its branches :think:Loves being a Wonderbra friend :kisses3:

ooh running, now this i can ramble about for a while
Marathon training is very hard work! I have though about it but I did the Great North Run (1/2 mara) and a couple of 10Km races last year and they were bad enough!!
Got a 5km Race for Life in 2 weeks (taking my stepD for her first competitve 'run'). Then i think i'll do a few 10Ks over summer again. Where are you based? Cancer research UK run a series of 10Km runs each year which might be a good starting point for you - to go from nothing to a marathon is a very tall order!
Check out https://www.runnersworld.co.uk for some great training schedules etc, although you ideally need to build up to running 30mins 3 times a week before really following a race programme. There are lots of beginners schedules on that site.
As for gear, clothes are not so important - i just wear jogging bottoms and a t shirt. Or shorts in summer/reflective vest in winter. You can get set up from sportssoccor or similar cheap store for not much money.
For trainers, if you are going to be serious about running then you can go to a specialist shop for a fitting where they video you running on a treadmill etc and assess your style. You will pay anything from £80-150+ for your shoes from there. However, i would say don't do this straight away, go for a few runs first to see if you actually enjoy it. Also, if you get assessed in the shop as having a 'normal' gait (so you don't land heavily on one side of the foot or the other) then a basic cushioned running shoe from a discount sport shop will be as good as anything for you. The specialist shoes are most vital for people who over/underpronate when they run and so need extra stabiliy on one side of the shoe or the other to avoid injury.0 -
I want to lose a stone and three pounds (especially if we are having a DFW meet!) in October. I have signed up for Race for Life in July and so far have done zilch! I have kept my gym membership - DESPITE - being almost thrown of DFW board for such insubordination, and yes nearly twelve months later I have been to the gym at least once - to use the bar! I can almost hear the told you so's from here. Anyway, I also joined slimming world but whilst I loved the eating plan, found it hard working full time, going to classes, trying to budget. It was all a bit too much too soon.
I am seriously lacking in motivation to lose the weight by either diet or exercise. What can I do? someone kick my !!!! will they?Quality is doing something right when no one is looking - Henry Ford

Wow, thanks for that...
I don't even own any joggers and I refuse to go jogging in my shorts. I was going to take a trip to Primark for some cheapies if they do them. I've also been recommended to get a sports bra. Am going to scour TKmaxx first to see if they do those.
The more I look into it though, the more I'm being put off. Its hubby that wants to do the marathon (he finds the bike ride to easy). But running around the streets is easier and less dangerous (in terms of getting run over) than cycling.
A friend of mine told me to do the race for life, but I'm put off by the fees...£10 to join. I know it's not much, but 2 pairs of trainers, 1 pair of joggers, a bra and £10 to sign up and then more money to sign up for other runs...these days I see £10 as being half a weeks food. Hence why I was going for a bigger challenge...is a half marathon in one year feasible?
I'm based in Surrey btw.0 -
If anyone does run the marathon can I be the official DFW nipple anti-chaffer?
I'll even pay for the vaseline.0
