I've drifted away from properly planning over the last couple of months but last week got stuck back into it with a vengance. Sort of. I had the whole plan written on the blackboard in the kitchen with days next to it. Ended up with Thursday's dinner on Sunday so Sunday got pushed to Monday. Monday's planned meal didn't really work out (was based on leftovers but the proportions were wrong) so Tuesday was a variation on the theme of what I was planning for Monday. Wednesday we actually had what was planned and same for Friday. Thursday was something completely different that I'd forgotten I had in the freezer, we had Tuesday's planned meal on Saturday and Saturday's dinner got pushed back to this week.
Given that the meal planning is really there to define my shopping list, I think I can claim to have stuck to the plan!
Been much better this week. I stuck to what was planned for Mon, Tue & Thur. Struggled to plan for Wed because I wasn't going to be home but OH managed to feed himself something from the freezer which hasn't upset the rest of the plan. Got tonights stuff out of the freezer on plan too.
Can't remember what I had planned for Saturday because I've lost the scrap of paper it was all scribbled down on but there are about 4 meals I can make out of the stuff we've got in at the moment. I'm hoping to stretch current stocks through most of next week so I'll switch off meal-planning mode for a while again. Start again when the cupboards are bare enough to warrant going shopping again.
I think my biggest problem with the whole meal-plan-so-you-buy-what-you-need aspect is I'm never quite sure how many meals I can get from the veg I buy. My meal plan will tell me to buy a bag of carrots or a head of brocoli or whatever and I use them in that meal but then I have some left over. They'll get taken into account in the next weeks plan but then we get to times like now where I reckon I can stretch last week's "leftover" veg through the whole of the next week which just means being creative with what I put them with. And as the freezer is filled with YS stuff that is bought off-plan, I'm gonna try to combine it with the extra veg for a shopping free week.0 -
