Opened presents at midnight so I could have a lie in before work. Up at 10.30 with a raging hangover, phoned Mum who seemed puzzled about 3 presents I said I had bought my Dad (one of them was a special one so was panicking) luckily she found another bag of presents and it was in there.
Mum phoned back while I was eating my breakfast to tell me she loved her presents, Dad's voice was cracking as I spoke to him telling me how much he loved his whisky glass that I had specially engraved for him. Had a lovely breakfast of english muffins, scrambled egg and smoked salmon - OH cracked up as I burned one muffin in the toaster :D
Went to work and we were one down as my colleague went home poorly after five minutes so I volunteered to stay late to cover; shift was fraught as an entire bay was down with the flu and the majority of the rest of the patients seemed to be kicking off...
Knowing OH cooking skills :D I was pleasantly surprised to get home to an actually rather nice Christmas dinner and then was subjected to his idea of Christmas Day affection.. ie unwanted gropings :p
Have spent most of the day feeling mildly irritated and the remainder feeling sorry for myself so not great really :D

Huge sympathy to all those who are ill today :(

Esp the poster with the DD with the runs. We recently had the sick one and 4 of my 5 managed to 'redesign' three carpets, a rug, the dining table, numerous items of clothing, all of their beds, the toilet and the bathroom wall (!)

This being in spite of sick bowls being readily available... I mean, I get it the first time you might get caught short but really...

My days been really good actually, despite working this morning and getting hardly any sleep last night due to drunks fighting outside!

Hubby forgot to turn oven on or prepare turkey in my absence so we ate fairly late, but its been a really nice day.

Sorry to all those who are poorly (ive had xmases like that) now just a couple more drinks and bed!

Had a fab day, very laid back, in-laws cooked the most gorgeous Christmas dinner, the Turkey was perfect - so moist (the best I've ever had) and the roast potatoes were just fabulous - had been looking forward to them for weeks! Oh and we received lovely pressies and everyone seemed very happy wirth the gifts we gave them - what more could you ask for. :D

Daughter working nights all over Christmas, due to her keeping my head above water due to a disastrous year. She will be repaid with interest when house purchase completes soon.

Prepped all food here in the family home and cooked in her lovely rented place. Not the best I've ever done, but was good to spend time in her aura of lovliness.

She insisted I take the family dog which as as rescue, I was concerned at how he'd behave. He settled on his blanket and was fine.

In the good days gone by, I would have left all food behind, but me, being totally broke we divided it.
One Avocado each etc. The box for my food was ready to be loaded for me to take home, in her kitchen.

Suddenly I heard a gutteral sound from our dog, like a Heron trying to swallow a fish, and it was so. The little beggar had swiped my share of smoked Mackeral, evidenced by the peppercorns on the floor.

She, was convulsed with laughter at all this. I feigned disgust at the pair of them ;) and then drove her her to her nightshift in emergency theatre.

They have a a buffet going on where all take a contribution. If I find the other smoked mackeral is there, I swear ....

My Christmas moment, was seeing my daughter doubled up at our naughty dog.

The funny thing is that even those who had a crap time will say when asked in person "oh yes it's was lovely"!!! Such a British thing as to say "it was !!!!!!" makes the person who asked feel awkward!

  • I have truthfully been upset and tearful thinking about my first (and hopefully last) Christmas Day on my own. I adore Christmas, quiet time with family. Found out in Feb my husband (soon to be ex) had become besotted with a woman 20 years younger than me - he lives elsewhere on his own now, he's spent Christmas with his brother and his family. Our son booked a trip in May to be travelling through October to January. My parents are dead, my sisters have frenetic Christmases, friends have invited me to theirs but I couldn't bear to be playing happy families with other peoples families and thinking back to what I though were perfect Christmases before. I dreaded my lonely day but it's been pretty good! I walked my dog and a friends dog (she's away visiting family) through the wettest park there could be (!!) Snuggled up and watched TV with dogs with chocolate croissants and milky coffee, cooked slow roasted lamb with lots of veggies, ate around 4pm, snoozing and just letting the day float by ... I missed a call from my son while out with the dogs, but it's OK, he'll be home in two weeks or so. And chilled in front of TV all evening.

I've had some lovely gifts from dear friends. Calls and messages from family and friends letting me know I'm not "alone". It's not the Christmas I would have chosen, but, boy-o-boy, it could have been one heck of a lot worse! Feeling blessed with the lovely people in my life.

Our day didn't go according to plan. :D

Our 1pm lunch ended up a 4.30pm dinner, I burnt some of the stuffing, I made soggy parsnips (cos I thought I'd save time by parboiling them for a few minutes only I forgot about them and they were in there for ages :o:D), and my braised red cabbage tasted like apple strudel. :rotfl:

We deliberately didn't have a starter this year but we were all so full after the main course that we'd no room for dessert either.

OH has taken mutt out for a walk, kids are watching the chipmunks and I'm having a break before we tackle the dishes.

    I am soooooooo relieved it's over. :D

I hope you all are having a lovely day.

It came, it went - it's over, i survived.

A big 'to do' about nothing bar the commercialisation of it all.

  • My day wasn't too bad. It's the first one we've had since my sister moved away this year so she wasn't here which was odd and a bit sad.

Me and OH took our dog for a walk on the beach and he got messier than he's ever been down there, covered in mud but had a good time, walked him home and he had to have a scrub down bath which he didn't like much.

Went to start dinner eventually at around 4pm, turned on the oven and all the lights and everything went off - flipped the switch back on and turned oven back on and they went again - Oven broke on Christmas day!
Luckily we had cooked the turkey last night. But we had to cook everything else on the stove and do without a few things that needed the oven really. It was still good but tomorrow's roast is off the menu with no oven for now and a curry is on the menu with the leftover turkey.

I got some nice things and I think everyone else enjoyed their day. Very tired now and off to bed soon, hopefully tomorrow will be a more relaxing day though.
