Could they not also happen if someone was in the car with this kids also? Same as being hit by another car- not dependent on and adult being present or not

yup. Of courrse I would expect an adult to instantly smell smoke/see sparks and be evacuating the car ASAP
I have been 'lucky' enough to have 2 cars have near electrical fires
    A Renault 9.one of my 1st cars and a total heap(but I loved it)
a wire came loose and wrapped round the steering column
smoked started pouring out of the shroud.
The 2nd was a Mk3 Cavalier. The rear fog wire shorted and burned out inside the plastic near the rear cluster. thankfully it stopped at some melted plastic/insulation
  • Havent read the whole thread but I used to sometimes leave my kids in the car for a few minutes while I popped into the petrol station to pay or whatever. Then I had a car which developed an electric fault and burst into flames. The fault was in the towbar electrics and happened when the car was parked in the driveway.

Doesnt bear thinking about does it?

But if you are in the car with a baby you can lift it out of the car!

As I have said fires are rare - but the fire that happened near me passers by noticed the flames and got one child out.

As for being in a parked car that is hit - more likely than the fire scenario - surely it would be more terrifying for the child if alone?

Unlikely events - just like car being stolen - it comes down to what you are comfortable with. I'm not - you are.
  • No excuses! Lazy parenting! It doesn't matter to me how rare an abduction is, a fire is an accident within a locked or unlocked car is, it's still a risk, and a stupid risk to take!

If I saw what the op did I would report it to the store who in turn would report to the police.

This happened to my colleagues in the summer-they saw a small baby in a car and it was on a particularly warm day (apparently there was one?!). They rang the police who in turn got customer services to do an announcement for mum. Apparently she came out with a trolley full of stuff and said she had only 'been 2 seconds' and was thoroughly abusive to everyone. The police seemed happy to give her a good rollocking and thanked my colleagues so I would do the same thing.

Neither of those link to an event where a child was taken from a car and killed though which is what Sharnad said:

children left in cars have been taken and killed, taken and never found

They also went on to say

Five minutes is how long it would take for someone to steal your car take your child rale and kill them.

Again, where is the evidence of this?

    car fires happen though
I wouldnt class it as rare as hens teeth. go to any scrapyard in the UK and there will at least one burnt out car with no accident damage
never seen a car on fire at the side of the motorway?
unlikely yes, but a real posibility

    http://www.indianexpress.com/news/2-children-among-three-burnt-to-death-inside-car/1050272/

wonder what happened here for example

In my 40 years of being alive I've only seen one car on fire-ish at the side of the road, and that was probably less than 4 years ago. For the past 10+ years I have lived a good distance from family so made many, many trips up various motorways.

You provided a link from an Indian news site, a very sad story, but have you seen the kip of a lot of cars over there? It's like comparing apples and oranges.

My dad is a mechanic with nearly 50 years experience, I'll have to ask him about what he knows about incidences over here, he's a massive car geek. So if anyone will know it'll be him :)

I was a kid in the 70's and don't know of anyone who was kidnapped or died while being left in a car for a bit. I reckon dogs are the ones most at risk.
