A free credit checking website... bit slower at updating than equif@x etc but free.

  • I've just ordered some insulating tape stuff for our windows in the flat. Can anyone give me any further ideas for other ways of helping to reduce draughts/increase heat in the flat?

I've been keeping the curtains closed, and might get some cheapy fleece blankets to hang up behind the curtains. We only have single pane wooden frame windows, and storage heaters. We also have to be careful as it's a rented flat, so I don't want to do the plastic shrinking thing incase it damages the panes further. Thanks :)

Look for 'window insulation film' on fleabay - it works pretty well. You stick it down with double sided tape, blast it with a hairdryer, which makes it go taut, and it cuts the draft way down. Only problem is, you need to remove it for summer, or you can't open the windows! Alternatively, put cling film on the glass, which is cheaper but not as effective. I also stuff bits of old newspaper around the edges of the window, or bits of old fabric.
  • I'm just worried about doing the film thing as it can apparently damage the panes when you pull it off and as we rent I need to keep the damage to a minimum :(

It'll be fine, I did it last year and it made a MASSIVE difference. The double sided tape they give you isn't massively sticky so you can just pull it off in spring without damaging the walls. Plus they normally give you too much tape so you can use it for parceling handmade goodies for people that buy them if you do that, looks nicer than tape :)

No debt busting for me today, but I might have just bought a cat :) She's not exactly what I wanted, but she needs rehoming as she's being attacked by the other cat and at only £60 instead of the £350 breeders ask for I'm going to say "yes please" to that :) ....although then I'm going to go to a breeder and get a little boy as well, as I do want one of each and he'll be younger so she should cope just fine with him :) Have to wait for the snow to b*gger off first though so I can drive to get her :)

I've spent the entire day watching Cats on youtub :D and singing of course. Veggie roast in the oven at the moment and a carrot, parnsip & swede soup in the slow cooker...I have no idea if it's going to taste nice or not, but it's got some cayenne pepper and smoked paprika in to give it a bit of a kick ;)
