  • Google Couchto5k which is an excellent running programme for beginners. There's no assumption that you can run more than a few yards at first but it's a structured programme which gets you running for longer and longer with shorter walking intervals. And, I know it's easy to say, but most people are actually impressed when they see an overweight person getting out and doing something. It's free too apart from the cost of a pair of running shoes

C25K would be extremely difficult to someone with that amount of excess weight, even on a treadmill. As already mentioned, the impact on the knees and ankles could cause a fair bit of damage.

I don't see why. I've just completed it and I was only a couple of stone under that when I started. Plenty of people of that weight do it - this very informative site has a busy thread for runners over 200 pounds. The right shoes would be important but the OP wouldn't be going more than a few minutes at a time for several weeks. Obviously there are many forms of exercise available but I suspect if the OP feels self-conscious about running, he (?) may also do about swimming or going to a gym.

The point about the programme is it designed for people with a very low level of fitness to start with so it's not about trying to run 5k first time round. It's actually recommended that if you can't run at all , you should just walk for half an hour for a few sessions before you start the programme proper. It's not necessarily for everyone but it's certainly a confidence booster to be able to run for a bus and be able to speak coherently to the driver rather than collapsing like a panting lobster when you try to pay :rotfl:

Hi I weighed 13.5 stone (5ft 10) and according to BMI I was considered overweight and very unfit. Never exercised much (ie never at all!) I decided enough was enough I had already had the pleasure of £50 per month gym membership for over 2 years and had used it once! I decided to take baby steps and get online and i found a 12 week jogging plan ( I know you don't want to jog on your own because its embarrassing, I felt the same but went early in the morning before work- less people about and means I got it over with each day!). The jogging plan was for beginners which meant I went jogging for 1 min and walking for 2 mins x 5 in week 1 to eventually running 30 mins solid by week 12! I also started the eat clean diet by Tosca Reno. Both of these meant I lost 3 stone in 4-5 months! Didn't realise that was even possible!

I have recently stopped jogging and have started eating rubbish the last 2 months and have put on one of the stones. :(

I'm going to restart jogging tomorrow morning and get rid of the crap food.

You can do this. Take it a day at a time and have some determination and you will go far!

I really would recommend the eat clean diet. It's not the only eating plan out there but I personally found it great as I didn't want to count calories and it was simple to follow. I think adopting the new diet greatly accelerated my weight loss.

Because I am naturally lazy I forced myself to jog EVERY morning and I found I hated it so much and I channelled my hate for jogging into motivation to refrain from eating junk food (and follow my diet plan) because I convinced myself that eating any junk food would just make my jogging tougher and.i didn't want that to happen! It's all about your mental attitude (something which has gone astray for me lately!)

It's great you are aiming to go in hard with military type training and it might be the right choice for you but may be difficult to start with. If I were you i would get started today (or tomorrow) with whatever exercise plan you have chosen but no later. There will always be next week (new years) as the start date and I find that New Years resolutions add extra pressure and makes people more cynical (because of their own failures). Take ownership of this yourself you don't need a new year to make the change, you are doing this because you are unhappy so get out there as soon as possible!

Let me know if you need any tips. I'm no expert but can relate in a small way which might be useful.

Good luck! You can do this!!!!! KS:)

Right so just weighed myself 14.52 st  thats over 200 lbs YUCK

So 6 long 12.5hr shifts wont give me time to exercise much but at least I'll be on my feet for most of it.

Not taking money to work so I cant snack and starting to have breakfast.

Manymany years ago I used to go the gym every night for hours on end. I lost 5stone but gained ever single lb back over the years. The problem for me wasthat the gym got really boring and there was no way I could keep it up with mybusy life. Fast forward a few years and after gaining the weight back I joinedthe gym again, lost motivation as I was not enjoying it and to top it off itwas costing me around £50 a month! - It was pointless and certainly was notmoneysaving!

Iwould never join the gym again. Over the past several months I decided to getmyself fitter by doing everything I could apart from joining a gym. Instead Icycled to work and back a few days a week and on the night I would go outcycling and have recently started running. Since doing this I have lost andmost importantly maintained a 2 stone weight loss.

Losingweight should be fun. I did not want to lose TONS of weight in a short amountof time. Despite it only being 2 stone lost you can definitely see thedifference and its fab to have people commenting on how good I look! My aim nowis to maintain my current weight loss. I am still cycling and running (althoughhave had to have a bit of time off due to illness). I aim to get even fitterwhen the weather warms up. In my area we have a local weekend cycling andrambling club which look really fun to get involved in!
    Goodluck to you!
