you cant reheat it in the slow cooker. put it into a saucepan and reheat thoroughly in that, letting it come to full boil and boil for a couple of mins to kill the bugs.
  • Firstly, Happy New Year to you all.

Having cooked a Gammon joint in our SC in cider, does anyone have any suggestions as to what to do with the residue (please - don't suggest I drink it :rotfl:)?

    Thanks in advance.

    Sometimes I wonder...
"why is that frisbee getting bigger?"
    ...and then it hits me

I pop the ham stock into a jug and put it in the fridge. Then I soak some dried peas overnight and then pop into the slow cooker with the gammon residue, some chopped onion and some extra marigold veggie stock and leave it on low all day to make a soup. If there are any bits of gammon spare I pop these in as well. A quick whizz with the hand blender and I have a lovely thick pea and ham soup. Really tasty and one of my OH's favourite soups for his packed lunches (freezes well).

So how long does stuff last in the slow cooker? Is it safe to reheat it a day later?

I made mine overnight on the 30th, and was going to tuck in yesterday, but then I thought I'd make some dumplings and put them in last night so it's still sitting there this morning waiting to be eaten. Is it safe to do so? :O

I would say heat it in a saucepan then tip it back in the slow cooker, or chuck a little bit of boiling water in the slow cooker to get it back up to temperature - did this yesterday with beef leftover from first forray into slow cooking, and this evening with sausage casserole. yummy! :D

I did cheat and just get a jar of homepride sausage casserole sauce though - 2/3 chopped onion, tin of whole carrots, two small tins of new potatoes, and two packs of sausages - cooked them for 25 mins then popped them on top of the veg and sauce, cooked on high for 4 hours. Gorgeous, best sausages ever hubby says!
  • Today I've done my first ever soup! Clearing out the fridge I grabbed all the homeless veg that was not likely to be used, with an onion and chucked it all in the slow cooker with lentils herbs and spices. Wasn't sure how it'd be but it's lovely! I've frozen it into portions for lunches at work - and to think it would've ended up in the composter!

Did exactly the same - made a lovely soup today from left over veg from xmas which would have gone orrible if left,in went, carrots, parsnips, potatoes, onions, leeks, some herbs and 2 pints of veg stock and a tin of veg balti which gave it a nice spicy taste, thickened it with some gravy thickener just before I served it with some nice warm crusty bread...mmmm there is same amount left over for tommorrow - may blizt it down and use on some pasta yet we'll have to see.......

Forgot to say - left it on for 5 hours on High to really give it a good go and soften the veg - it all went in cold and hard etc

today I am attempting chilli.. but without the icky kidney beans! _pale_

chucked in two small red onions, green chilli's, red pepper, three cloves of garlic, cooked mince, really tiny tin of tomato puree, and half a bag of frozen mushrooms! oh and a colemans packet of chilli con carne sauce mix.

had some whoopsie wraps in the freezer - am looking forward to dinner! It's been on high for two hours, now on low. :)
