  • Hi All

think I may have posted this into the wrong slow cooker thread (is it me or are they multiplying?)

Anyway, I plucked up the courage and bought a large Gammon Joint (approx 2kg - 2 adults, 4 children) from a butcher for lunch tomorrow, my question is this:

Having read the multitude of SC threads on here, what would the best way to cook the joint in the slow cooker (low for a long time (8hrs?) or on a high heat (4hrs?).

I am currently soaking the joint in cold water as I forgot to ask if it needed the salt removed (how rubbish am I LOL!) when at the butchers.

Will probably cook in some cider - has anyone not bothered finishing it in the oven or is this required regardless?

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

Hi, I am also a newbie with a slow cooker. I cooked a 2½ kg Gammon the other night. Approx 2 hours on high then turned it down low overnight. It was absolutely beautiful - really tender and not too crumbly. I cooked it in cherry cola with some onion and tbsp peppercorns. I was going to glaze it and finish it in the oven but didn't bother in the end - it was absolutely fine. Good luck.

  • Piggeh - if any slow cooker meals go like that I put a good dollop of cornflour in some milk, makea paste and stir it in. It should go right then. Also, I have found that adding a handful of barley at the very start avoids that watery like consistency and gives you a good thick stew.

Just got back from Tescos with 600g beef steak reduced to £2 and lamb mince reduced to £1 so feeling very chuffed with myself as I never time it right for yellow sticker stuff! It's useby was for today so I've stuck it in the slow cooker ...

side 1 = beef and ale casserole with onions and potatoes

side 2 = lamb mince, chopped toms, red wine, stock, onions

:) will portion it up to freeze for when I go back to work next week :D

Oh wow That was delicious, I have just eaten beef casserole done in the SC

    I used
1 x bag of frozen diced beef.
    2 x onions
    Handful of frozen carrots
    Frozen sweetcorn
    Frozen peas
    1 x tin of toms
    few handfuls of lentils
cubed potatoes (to make it a one-pot)
2 x sachets of colman's beef casserole powders (I had these as they were reduced in the local somerfield to 9p each, so picked up a load of them)
    Topped up with water

Left it on medium for about 7hrs, even the kids have wolfed it down and there is enough for tomorrow too....

Spag Bol in my big one and chocolate pudding in the little one!

Thought I would be extra generous today and give the family a pudding!

When DD gets home she is going to make some garlic butter to go on our bread that is currently baking! Ooh I love the smells!

oooh choc pud sounds nice do you have a recipe?? am very boring with my slo cooker and have small one and family size one and all i do is dust it down now and again and make beef stew in it to the recipe that came with the cooker. had no idea you could do so much with it. my husband used to do all the cooking as he said it relaxed him and once made disabled with back was very grateful as could no longer stand or sit really to prepare a dinner. but he left us couple of months ago and so now i really need to make at least 2 or 3 dinners a week to give son break from the frozen dinners that get nukked in the microwave or shoved in the oven. there are so many things that come ready prepared these days that i could use them and son has offered to prepare veg night before so all i need to do is throw it all in slo cooker for a nice dinner when he gets home from college. all i lack really now is the imagination, but will read up on this thread and jot down some ideas

So how long does stuff last in the slow cooker? Is it safe to reheat it a day later?

I made mine overnight on the 30th, and was going to tuck in yesterday, but then I thought I'd make some dumplings and put them in last night so it's still sitting there this morning waiting to be eaten. Is it safe to do so? :O

  • Morning everyone, and Happy New Year. First post on this thread, and seeking help. I’m trying wild rabbit in slow cooker today, bought prepared and ready frozen from local butcher (using Rabbit Stew recipe in River Cottage Meat), guessing 6-8 hours on low. Now meat is defrosted I find some offal inside, ?heart, liver, kidney. My question is – should I put these in SC with meat – will they enhance flavour or overpower it? Does anyone have any advice? Thank you.
