Salvaged the juice from the roast today that was done in SC and have now thrown in celery, leek, half red pepper, carrots and mushrooms to go towards a soup for tomorrows lunch with some of the left over beef thrown in to bulk out when serving.

I soak mine overnight and then do them in the slow cooker all day or overnight on auto. I usually do chicken and chick pea curry.

Thanks missychrissy - thats good to know. i was planning on doing the mexican chicken thing all day. Will report back how it goes.

Last year I cooked my christmas turkey in my slow cooker (it was a huge boneless breast that filled a 5.7L pot) and it turned out great - nice and tender. I'm going to do the same this year, but can't remember how I did it.

I'm thinking of an inch of chicken stock, mixed herbs, onions and carrots; then sitting the turkey on top and cooking on low for about 8 hours on low. Any thoughts?

I was also wondering about trying to brown it off afterwards in the oven ... although it is skinless and I'm not sure this will work?

I've done it similar - butter on top squirt of lemon jiuce and on low for about 9 hours with a abot half inch of boiling water at bottom, not sure about browning, but I've many times put pork in the oven to crisp up for 30 mins or so.
Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading.
  • Hi I have found a few recipes for Turkey legs in the slow cooker but am still not sure if I should put lots of liquid in with it? I will put in carrots but no onions as some of it is for my Darling Doggy as well as my DD:rotfl:
Any ideas will be very welcome as to what to do with them as I have two to cook! lol

Ermmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm - does the water/liquid have to completely cover whatever one puts in the slow cooker?

Got some beef cubes/onions/potatoes/carrots in there right now and looks like a soup rather than a prospective stew....

Have I overdone it with the water?

    scratching head.... hmmmm

You may have slightly over done the liquid. You need to remember that the liquid doesn't evaporate from a Slow Cooker in the same way that it does from a saucepan/casserole dish.

You can thicken it by adding some 'slaked' cornflour (cornflour mixed with a little water to form a paste) stirred into whatever is cooking, OR adding some gravy granules, OR adding some powdered mash (I keep a pack of SmartPrice Mash handy for this ;)), OR removing some of the cooked veggies, blending them and stirring them back in again.

Of course, you can always remove some of the cooking liquid - depending on how long it's been cooking.

sunday dinner was gammon hock meat, roast pots and green split mushy peas (meat, peas & carrots from s/c not the pots!) - we just cant get enough!! and its soo cheap! and so there will be pea and ham soup for dinner :D

oh, sunday night i asked my chap to plate up the meat whilst i showered. he complained as he had to sort a video and get the fire going and didnt have time. i said that if i'd have showered first, i'd have those jobs now, so he shouldn't complain!!!

anyway, all was done and he couldnt stop commenting on how the meat just fell off the bone - he had to fish some out from the peas with the pasta spoon! :T
