I've had to stop using dumplings, unfortunately, because everybody kept stuffing themselves with dumplings, and not having room for anything else.

I've tried making them without any fat at all, and they were really heavy, but just about edible. I would just try it and see, as it can't be that much different from suet. I would love to know how you get on.

    Thanks for that. :D
Well I have found this link:

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=298047

says to use 2oz marge to 4oz flour. but a few of the posts (I havn't time to read them all!) says you can m,ake them with flour and water only? that would be interesting. Will try the marge/flour ones thought I think! the method is half fat to flour. should have known this....:o

Put porridge in mine last night for kids to get up to this morning only i had to come down at 3am to turn it off as it was already cooked. A good 2 litres of porridge had done in 3 hours on low so boys were not impressed at cold porridge this morning as i didnt have time to scoop it out and warm it on the hob (as no microwave) due to a very early hospital app.

Just a simple beef stew today, bulked out with veg and I'll be putting some dumplings on top later. I intend this to last for 3 days!! Beef, Potatoes, Onion, Parsnip, Carrots, Oxo, Marjaram, Soy Sauce, Worcestershire Sauce and seasoning. Yum! My house smells edible.

The night before yesterday, I got some stewing beef out of the freezer to defrost overnight, so I could slow cook it yesterday. Yesterday I bought two stewpacks for the price of one in Tesco. I used one to make a beef stew in the SC yesterday, with the intention of making some vegetable soup with the other pack. (VERY cross with myself for forgetting to put some pearl barley in with it though.)

However, while I was in Tesco yesterday, they had some organic chicken thighs and drumsticks reduced to £1.50 (from £4) so I nabbed those and once the beef thing had finished, the crockpot got washed out and I made a country chicken casserole (now in the freezer) using two of the carrots and one of the onions from the spare stewpack, plus half a head of celery.

Took DS2 into Tesco today for something or other and there was another reduced pack of organic chicken thighs and drumsticks :j.

So there's another country chicken casserole in there today, using the rest of the onions and carrots from the spare stewpack and the rest of the celery, which in my pre-unemployed days, would probably have ended up going limp and liquid in the bottom of the fridge!

I feel like I'm close to becoming a paid-up member of the OS Club :D

Only problem now, is that I'm running out of plastic boxes to use to store stuff in the freezer

he he! Snap!! ;) the stew packs were good I thought. worked out at a £1 each. as there are only 2 of us I hate buying big bags of things as they (have previously) gone off sometimes. these are ideal for us! So we have Stew in today and I am cooking a chicken in SC tomorrow and will add more veg for a Chicken winter soup/stew. I have only a tiny freezer as we live in a flat but DH has promised I can have a seperate freezer so I can freeze foods ready after batch cooking :D

ps. can't believe I actually looked to see if you lived near me to give you some freezer cartons! I have loads he he:o

I always freeze stews etc in 1kg margarine tubs with the lids on. They stack beautifully in my freezer. I can get four to a drawer in mine.

I find that a 250g tub is good for the topping for a jacket potato.

I had LOADs of those tubs, until I eventually got fed up with them just cluttering up the cupboard, so chucked them out.

THEN I lost my job, and could really do with having them to use now!!

I was so wasteful up until a couple of months ago. Now I've more time on my hands, I am becoming more OS and regretting my gleeful chucking out habits!

I have started lining my plastic containers with cling film before putting them into freeze, once the contents are frozen I lift them out in the cling film wrap in freezer bag and store in bag, means I can reuse the container again.

Soon to be chicken with lime and coriander. I shall put more seasoning in this time, as the last one was fine, but needed a bit more lime.

I shall probably get sick of chicken this month, as I've just bought 4 (1/2 price medium ones) from the co-op for under £8. I may buy more as its too good a bargain.
