  • In my slow-cooker *earlier* today would be a more appropriate title at the minute - I prepped and started a sausage casserole (loosely based on something someone once said on this board, I think, possibly on this thread) for dinner, but we got home for lunch so late that I ended up just finishing it off and serving it at just-past-4.

I put a little bit of oil in the slow-cooker and turned it on to high, then added a chopped brown onion and a chopped red onion (because that was what was in the onion basket) and a chopped green pepper (because it was going wrinkly in the fridge). Stirred all that and left it to stew and soften a bit while I browned sausages under the grill. When they were done, I cut them in thirds and added them, along with a couple of cans of chopped tomatoes, a bit of stock, some oregano and thyme, a fair bit of paprika and a bit of red wine vinegar. I left that all to cook on low from about 10.30ish.

When we got home about 3.20, there was some liquid (as I'd expected), so I added a packet of pasta (macaroni, because that was what was in the cupboard - can you tell it's time to go grocery-shopping?) and stirred it. It looked like the liquid wouldn't be enough for the pasta, so I poured some boiling water in too - just a few ounces. Left it to simmer on high for about 25 minutes, stirring it every 5 minutes or so, until the pasta was cooked. Everybody had seconds, and some even had thirds. Have been requested to "definitely cook this again!" :-)
  • I'm making rice pudding in mine! :D
  • I have made a spainish stew {chicken pieces, prawns, passata, onions, peppers, paprika, garlic, salt, pepper, oil and a little chilli}, which will be eaten with just some bread to mop up the gorgeous sauce

I didn't use a recipe. I just bought some mince, not sure how much but lean steak mince £2.88 so medium sized pack. One onion, one red pepper, teaspoon and half of hot chilli powder (as asda had no fresh chillis), 2 cloves garlic, one beef stockcube mixed with about a half cup of water, one tin chopped tomatoes with herbs, one dessertspoon of sugar, one and a half dessertspoonfuls of smoked paprika and one spoonful of instant coffee mixed with a little water. Oh and kidney beans added later which I forgot at first.

I don't know whether my little additions of a bit of coffee have made any real flavour difference but the whole combination works.

Sorry but I just tend to chuck things in and hope for the best.

Thanks for this will try it tomorrow:T

thanks I thought that but wanted to check, I go through phases of using my SC although it is always out on the side, its getting it all prepared in the morning as well as getting the kids and me ready for work!!

I always prep the night before - leave any veggies in water overnight on the kitchen worktop and any meat in pieces (marinading if necessary) in the fridge. I just sort it out quickly in the morning.

If you do something in the slow cooker like a bolognese or stew, do you leave the leftover in the pot and reheat it the next day to use again or do you put it in a tub and put it in the fridge/freezer?

We eat for tea , then transfer to another dish to cool and put in the fridge for tea tomorrow or devide whats left if I batch cook into lock and lock boxes ready for the freezer.

I do not leave any food in my SC but that is just a me thing.
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?

I do that all the time, I think I'm still alive though? I've only done it when it's only been vegetables in the stew though. I fill my slow cooker with stew, then eat some throughout the day, and if there's some left leave it over night and reheat in the next day in the slow cooker.
Can you get food poisoning from vegetables? I've reheated it more than twice before as well.
I'm always too lazy to take it out the slow cooker and put it in the fridge, plus that would mean more washing up.
