I think this thread makes it obvious that slow cookers vary considerably. I had one back in the seventies and things didn't cook properly, they were always undercooked. I gave up in the end and used a pressure cooker instead. However, I now have a 4.5L Prestige SC and I have never had anything undercooked or burnt. I always use the auto setting that, according to my handbook, is 4 hours on high and then on low. I work night shifts and my SC is often on for 14 hours overnight.

I'm still experimenting, but I wouldn't like to be without a SC.
My big one si a delta from Aldi - it has a keep warm, low and high setting. Yesterday the low settings didn't seem to do the job, according to the manual recipes it should have taken 8-10 on low or 4-6 on high - not 12 on low and still not cooked. Think it will go back next week and I will look for a better one....
  • i have the 6.5 litre cookworks one also,,i find the lid a little fiddly,,if pushed too far to one side i can see a gap.
i did pork in mine overnight,,so going to cut it up now and fry it with some leftover rice from yeterday and add curry and perrpers
    Dont cry because it's over,
    Smile because it happened.

I would recommend the 6.5 litre cookworks one too. I haven't had any problems with the lid (so far!), and it cooks thoroughly and efficiently. Worth it while its still 1/2 price, and its easily as good as more expensive ones I've owned.

Can anyone help me in making chicken/beef/veg stock in my slow cooker? I've only used it twice in 3 years (was a present from MIL) and wasn't overly impressed.

I don't have a large enough saucepan and a stockpot is still some way down my list of things to get, but really want to start making my own soup and stuff.

How long would I cook it for and on what setting?

I use enough water to just cover the bones, with some added onion, garlic, or leek, plus carrots, herbs, and black pepper. A few hours should be sufficient for a chicken carcass. I usually leave any skin, and remaining meat on the bones while cooking.

Mine is an old one and if I want it cooked quicker then I pop a clean teatowel over the top (glass cloth!) it seems to work? it still lets out some steam too though so works better. might be a thought?!
