    I should have posted this yesterday, but forgot. I made a spicy meatball/kofta curry. It was really cheap to make, and will do five servings:
    800g steak mince (£3)
    2 medium onions
    2 finely chopped carrots
    200g frozen peas
    2 tins chopped tomatoes
    1 tin butter beans
    2 tsp crushed garlic
    Lemon juice
    2 tsp hot chilli powder
    2 tsp tandoori masala powder
    1 tsp turmeric powder
    Make 20 meatballs using the mince, 1 onion (finely chopped), half the spices and salt and pepper.
    Brown the remaining onions (roughly chopped) with the remainder of the spices, in a tablespoon of sunflower oil. Add the meatballs until browned nicely, then transfer them to a large pot, leaving the onion spice mix in the pan. Turn the heat down, and saute the chopped vegetables and butter beans. Add one tine of chopped tomatoes to the mix, and stir until the pan is deglazed, then transfer to the large pot. Add the other tin of chopped tomatoes, and lemon juice, and bring to a rolling boil. I also added a handful of chopped coriander. Put on the slow cooker for 15 minutes, and get the ingredients in the pot the the right consistency, by reducing or adding more water. Transfer to the slow cooker and leave for three to four hours at "High".
    You can eat this on its own, or with crusty bread or rice.

    Sounds lovely Andy, I will give that a go one day when the kids are being fed something else for dinner, they dont do curry yet!

    Well today I have a pork shoulder joint, and a fennel bulb, so will give this receipe a go:

    Is an american recipe so I am still trying to translate lol...dutch oven = grill?!

    2 1/2 pounds boneless pork shoulder roast
    1 teaspoon crushed fennel
    1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
    1/2 teaspoon crushed dried oregano
    1/4 teaspoon black pepper
    1 1/2 pound small redskin potatoes (halved)
    1 large fennel bulb, cut into 1-in pieces
    1 1/2 cup water
    2 teaspoons instant chicken boullion granules
    1/2 cup cold water
    1/4 cup all-purpose flour



    Directions:
    Trim fat from meat.

    Combine crushed fennel, garlic powder, oregano and pepper in small bowl.

    Rub approx. 1 tsp of mixture evenly on roast. Save the remainder.

    In a Dutch oven brown roast in oil. Drain.

    Put potatoes and fennel pieces into crockpot and sprinkle with remaining seasoning mixture.

    Mix chicken boullion and water together, add to crockpot.

    If necessary cut meat to fit into crockpot, place the roast on top of vegetables.

    Cook on low for 7-8 hours or high for 3.5-4 hours.

    For gravy, skim fat from cooking juices.

    Place 1.5 cups of juices into medium saucepan.

    Stir .5 cup cold water into flour, then stir mixture into juices in medium saucepan. Cook and stir until thickening. Cook one minute more. Season gravy to taste with salt and pepper.

    Hi Mumslave, the pork shoulder is such a good value cut of meat, and we had one for the first time in 17 years (!!!!) a couple of weeks ago. I must try slow cooking it though, because pork can dry out easily. I can almost taste the flavour of the slight anniseed fennel with the pork, lovely!

    I am :o to say that I dont think I have ever had fennel before, but I spotted it on offer at tesco, thought I would give it a go, quite looking forward to it! Tesco were doing 3 for £10 on a variety of meats, we got a whole medium chicken, gammon joint and the pork shoulder, bargain :)

    Jc, I hope you feel better tomorrow, if you were here I would give you some of the pumpkin soup I made the other day, it would have you feeling better in no time :p

    i've looked up the recipe for nigella's but it's done in stages and in the oven,,so has anyone any suggestions about scoring the skin and adding the cloves,,do i just do all that to start with,,i'm new to the sc so still finding my way around adapting recipes!!!TIA

    I did this and it was lovely, just filled the SC up with coke so it half covered the ham. Then after SC finished I scored the edges and spread with cherry jam and finished in the oven for 30 mins so there was a crisp edge.

    corr my teeth are hurting at the thought! Sure i did a lemon and lime soda chicken breast once though...long time ago now :D
