Waking up on a morning to the smell of chicken cooking is a very odd - but not unpleasant! - experience.

    Agreed! :D

Nothing today. Eating leftover casserole, with dumplings. I won't reheat in my SC; I did reheat a beef stew once in it, and survived. Very naughty, I know I wasn't supposed to!:naughty:

I have a pork cassulet in there. I listed everything in my cupboards and freezers yesterday and found for some reason I have half a ton of beans and pulses. I think I got them some time ago for being slimmer of the week at SW. So.... dried mixed pulses, beans and pasta mix, cubed pork, onion and a pork cassarole mix went in this morning. I'll add some mushrooms and tins of beans later.
I have no idea if my lot like it so it's a real experiment!

They are a wonder aren't they mumslave? I never understand this whole "unwanted wedding gift" thing as though they were a weird kitchen gadget that you wouldn't use!

In fact, years ago I saw someone get given two for wedding presents and they were the lovely beige type with designs on and I secretly hoped they'd offer me one but they didn't!
I've now got two - the 6.5L and the 3.5L.

    Thanks for the recipe!

I know, I wish someone had given one to me for my wedding! The one I was lucky enough to pick up has a lovely beige pot to take out and sit on the table, who wouldnt want one!

Well in my slow cooker today, I am giving another recipe out of my book a second running, winter vegetable soup. As somerfield have lots of reduced veg its barely costing me anything, but even so, you can make it for £5, to feed six big people...bargain!

    Ingredients
    50g Butter
    2 Onions, Chopped
    6-8 Carrots, Chopped
    6 Parsnips, Chopped
    6 Celery Sticks, Chopped
2 Beef Tomatos, skinned and chopped
    30ml Plain Flour
    1 Litre of Vegetable Stock
    1 Bouquet Garni Sachet
    Salt and Pepper

    Method
    1. Preheat slow cooker on High

    2. Heat the butter in a pan and saute the onions, carrots, parsnips and celery gently for around five minutes.

    3. Stir in the tomatos

    4. Mix the flour with some cold stock to make a paste then add this into the pan along with the remaining stock and the bouquet garni, then stir well. Season with salt and pepper to taste and bring to the boil. Transfer to the slow cooker.

    5. Cook on low for 6-10 hours. When finished throw away the bouquet garni.

Its fab with some thick crusty bread, or as a jacket tatty filler :)

They taste so much better done in the slow cooker than the pan dont they, and you dont have to keep topping up with stock. Only have to work out how to convince my children its great to eat too....

Did you brown the meatballs first, before putting into the slowcooker?

I find with anything that could be a 'bit fatty' (sausages, mince, chicken portions with the skin on etc) it does help to brown them first as this also helps to get rid of any excess fat.

Could you perhaps try to lay a couple of pieces of kitchen roll on the top of the food and see if that helps to 'draw up' any of the excess grease? Or perhaps use a very large spoon and try to skim some of the fat off the top?

    Good Luck :).
