hello peeps, i am new, i hope you dont mind me joining in, I adore my slow cooker, it cost me a whole fiver from a car bootie, unwanted wedding gift...with no plug attached lol! Its now one of my most prized possessions, with three kids under 5 and one more due to arrive in the new year.

In my slow cooker today....braised bacon with tomatoes, one of our favorite dishes out of a slow cooking recipe book I have, all copy rights to it, if i could only remember its name, and get off my bottom to check.

    Braised Bacon with Tomato

    Ingredients
    Gammon Joint, around 1kg smoked
    Brown Sugar
Tomatos, skinned and coarsely chopped around 6-8
    Onions, thinly sliced x 2
    Black Pepper
    Water 30ml
    Button Mushrooms 100g
    More water 30ml
    Lemon Juice
    Chopped Parsley

    Method
    1. Preheat slow cooker on high

    2. Place joint in a saucepan, pour cold water around it and bring to the boil gently. Discard water, remove joint from pan.

    3. Cut off the rind, snip any remaining fat at intervals. Sprinkle joint with brown sugar and brown/melt under a medium grill.

    4. Layer slices of tomato in the bottom of the slowcooker, then the onions. Add first 30ml of water and season with the pepper. Place the browned gammon joint on the top. Cover and cook on high for 3-5 hours.

    5. Around ten minutes before serving, cook mushrooms in the other 30ml of water and lemon juice, in a pan, for about 5 minutes. Use with the parsley as garnish for the joint.

Its fab with either mash or home made chips. Somerfield had gammon joints reduced from £6 to £3 the other week so i stocked up :)

  • They are a wonder aren't they mumslave? I never understand this whole "unwanted wedding gift" thing as though they were a weird kitchen gadget that you wouldn't use!

In fact, years ago I saw someone get given two for wedding presents and they were the lovely beige type with designs on and I secretly hoped they'd offer me one but they didn't!
I've now got two - the 6.5L and the 3.5L.

    Thanks for the recipe!

My new SC is a success. I only managed to fill it to just over a 1/3 today (mine used to be near the top before), so I can see myself using this loads.

Duck casserole recipe (which DD is demolishing); sliced duck breasts, carrots, parsnips, onions, garlic, tomatoes, blackberries (picked by DD), and pears (freebie), red wine, vegetable stock (using marigold powder), cayenne, cloves, cinnamon, honey, seasalt, and black pepper.
  • Smlsave ~ I managed to burn some as well, yay me! :rotfl:

And yes, I meant mushy peas...:o

I put it on low for 9 hours. The SC is from Tesco, cost me a tenner. The good news is that I got myself a SC recipe book today so if I burn my meal again I'll have someone else to blame :D

Hello Van, at least you keep trying. :rotfl:
I always manage to burn peas on the hob. I don't know why.

Yesterdays ham in cola was lovely. When it was cooked I bubbled some of the liquid off on the hob, added extra salt and pepper, worcestershire sauce, some paprika and then stirred in some single cream. The ham was falling to bits and the sauce over the top was delicious. Served it with mash (when you've boiled the potatoes drain and leave to steam before mashing, then mash with butter, salt and pepper, white and black, allow to steam again and then put the heat back under it and stir like mad before serving. Makes it really fluffy and creamy), boiled sweet potato and steamed broccoli. Everyone loved it!

Today frying steak (wouldn't eat it like that as only like fillet!), onion, celery, carrot and some red wine. Left it all day and then stirred some gravy granules in and had it on crusty bread with chopped onion and mustard. Again really nice and good to walk in from work to. My old cat whose on her last legs enjoyed some as well.

Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading.

Waking up on a morning to the smell of chicken cooking is a very odd - but not unpleasant! - experience. Haven't tasted the chicken yet but smells good, looks ok and i've about 1/2 a pint of stock after the fat's removed.

Today going in is browned mince, 1 onion, 1 red onion (to use it up) 2 stick of celery 2 cloves of garlic, 2 beef stock cubes 500ml of passata, 1 tsp sugar and 11/2 teaspoons of hot chilli powder. Will serve it with HM wedges and tortilla wraps and taco shells
