I'm in North Yorkshire too!
Vegetable Curry
Adjust quantities according to your taste but I use roughly that below.
1 Large onion chopped
potatoes chopped in bite size chunks
Small cauliflower
Carrots chopped quite small
Peppers chopped ( I chop and mix together red, yellow and green and freeze them on the day I buy them). I then just take out however many portions I want to add, usually about 2.
Mushrooms, if I have them (I also often freeze them if I think they are going to go to waste). I then just throw them in the slow cooker frozen as with the peppers.
Red Lentils - I use about 6 tablespoons
Split Peas - about 2 tablesponns soaked overnight
1 teaspoon of chopped chilli in a jar
1 teaspoon of chopped ginger in a jar
1 teaspoon of chopped garlic in a jar
2 teaspoons of coriander
2 teaspoons of garam masala
1 teaspoon of cumin powder
1 teaspoon tumeric
I throw the lot in together and just cover with boiling water and switch on to Auto. I cook it for about 8 hours. However, my slow cooker seems to be a lot less fierce than some and my veg holds it's shape well. If I have any I add some natural yoghurt over the curry on the plate.
This is a medium curry and never comes out the same twice as I use whatever I have though the spices remain very much the same.
I vary the above quite a bit. Sometimes I add a coconut block towards the end and sprinkle over flaked almonds. Sometimes I add meat. I serve it with basmati rice and/or Naan bread.0 -
evening all
could i have some help please?
i have finally moved the spiders out of my sc, now it's ready to work it's magic!
ok.. i'm thinking of beef casseroll, hopefully an easy start, i've brought--diced beef, carrotts, red onion (for colour), brocoli, other veg in freezer if needed.
i'll turn on the sc at about 9/10am tomorrow, how long should it take?(i would like the meat as soft as possible)
how small should i cut up the veg? brought sauce mix, says mix with 3/4 water, will this be too much (if so how much should i use)?
thanx in advance!!!!I SPOKE TO A WISE OLD MAN THE OTHER DAY.

Funnily enough I was just coming back to post that it was a bit of a disaster!
My dad used to make normal curry and add marrow to it and it was delicious as soaked up all the flavour. I tried it a while back and it was really nice.
Tonight however, it's horribleIt's probably my own fault as I used a cheap curry sauce which was really watery, so the curry is tasteless and very wet. I tried adding lentils earlier today as well as adding flour...then adding more curry powder and it's still really watery and quite tasteless. The curry itself is mainly marrow, potato, carrot and onion.
I don't have much luck with marrows as the last one I had I used a recipe from my slow cooker book which said to stuff it with tuna, rice and onion. It was vile, it tasted of nothing and smelled like sweat!
I think I need to ask my dad for a good curry recipe as tonight has really put me off jar sauces (even if it was a very cheap one).
So...any ideas on what I can do with some watery tasteless curry? Not to mention I still have half the marrow left which weights just over 3lb.

oh freakyoger, you have made me laugh:rotfl: sorry!
well as a newbie to slow cookers i think marrow will be one too miss, mainly curried!!!!!!
my dad used to stuff marrow with mince meat and onion, and lots of gravey on top, i think he boiled it or baked it, not sure, but was good.
it would be great if someone would give out some info on this, i would love to try it again.
oh just had a thought----isn't marrow a quite watery veg anyway, that poss added to the watery curry!!!!I SPOKE TO A WISE OLD MAN THE OTHER DAY.

Just a quickie, after starting to read this thread I was motivated to get my slo cooker out of the garage today, cooked a chicken in it and then made stock from the carcass which smells delicious. Tomorrow, we are going out for the day and my son has asked for a quorn bolognese for tea, could I make it in the slow cooker - I have heard that mince meat benefits from the slow cook but am a little concerned that the quorn mince will just absorb all the liquid and become a funny texture - anyone tried it? The only meat I eat is chicken hence the quorn question.I'm not a failure if I don't make it, I'm a success because I :tried!0

sorry I cant help AlwaysHappy - just what you said beef mince is helped by the long cooking time but I have never tried quorn
I am just about to make a fish pie in mine - wish me luck (never tried it before!)Emma
