I have only used my slow cooker a handfull of times and i am not much of a cook i'm afraid we tend to have a lot of convenience foods but i am trying to be more healthy as with 2 children i think it's important.

I have just used my freecycle slow cooker for the first time- I have made a chili con carne it will be ready in 5 hours. One thing bothers me - there are no mushrooms in it (following the proper instruction booklet) I would like to bulk it out- so could I put chopped mushrooms in and at what point? I have to put the kidney beans in 1 hour before the end.

in my SC at the moment is a tomato & lentil soup that I am experimenting with

I bunged it in last night before bed & am about to go & taste to see how it turned out

I have decided making soup overnight will be perfect for winter so I can have it ready to give to children for packed lunches & hubs to take to work so if anyone has any SC soup recipes I'd be grateful

Will update when I've tested my soup ;)

Impressed with the freecycle slow cooker!

Could you please tell me where you got the chilli recipe from? Would love to start using slow cooker so that tea is ready for when we get home from work :T Got a slow cooker, but have very rarely used it, cant believe that, because theyre prbobaly very useful, get a lovely hearty tea out of it, as soon as you walk in the door! Think Chilli may be an easy one to start with......

The Chili recipe was from the instruction booklet for my slowcooker. If you go to the Old Style Indexed Collections and click on Slow cooker Recipe Index, you will fid a Chili recipe as well as loads more to get you started - like you i'm a slow cooker virgin.

I have black beans in my brand spanking new slow cooker today! Put them on low at 1pm for about 3 hours then have had them up on high for 2.5 hours and they are beautiful and tender but not broken. I didn't even soak them overnight! :j

With them, I threw in a pinch of salt, lots of pepper and cumin. They're an accompaniment to a lime, lemongrass and chili chicken (dressing from Sainsbury's) + Spanish rice + veg combo I'll be doing. I'll be adding in some diced chili from the garden and a squeeze of fresh lime juice as well.

I know you're supposed to put kidney beans into chilli 1 hour or so before the end, but that defeats the object of bunging everything in and forgetting about it for me! I put the beans in at the beginning along with everything else and they always turn out fine.

To bulk my chillies out I add kidney beans, aduki beans, black eye beans, red lentils, mushrooms and peppers. Lentils are great for bulking. If you want to add mushrooms, stick them in whenever - again mine go in at the beginning, but you could put them in with your kidney beans 1 hour before you end.

I always put my kidney beans in at the beginning, and always add two tins instead of one (I love pulses).

    Spicy pasta sauce today. :D

this turned out really well - I will definitely be doing this more often as it is perfect for transferring to a thermos for OH & children to take to work/school
(I'll stick the recipe on the SC recipe thread)
