    I was just wondering how well a roasted joint of beef for example comes out using the slow cooker. Never done it that way before and didnt want OH complaining if it was too different to the usual. Do you think he would notice?

    Sorry me again - can i cook my jar of asda value curry sauce in the slow cooker or will it dry out too much? - as you can tell i havent really used my SC much before

    Hi slm - it won't look 'roasted' IYKWIM, but it should be succulent. I suppose it all depends on what the joint of meat is that you want to cook. I'm sure there'll be somebody else around in a minute who can tell you better than I can.

    I normally only do 'stew/casserole' type of thing in mine. Using a Turkey Drumstick today because we're low on food and I can leave it to cook itself while looking after grandchildren.

    Thank you - it is more than likely going to be covered in gravey so he shouldnt notice. It just seems scary as a joint of meat is fairly expensive to not eat if it all goes wrong

    You're welcome - by the way I've used a jar of Asda Curry Sauce (the SP one) in the slow cooker, but usually find that I'm better doing chicken curries (with diced chicken/turkey) in my big skillet pan as they cook so quickly.

    I guess if you're doing a beef/lamb/pork/chicken joint curry then the SC would be great.

    I have made chicken curry in the sc with sainsburys 7p curry sauce, very nice but only took a couple of hours to cook as it was chopped up chicken breast.

    I find beef curry more suited to the sc as the beef really tenderises and you don't need to worry about it drying out.

    Generally, jar sauces are fine to use in sc. They may go a bit watery but I usually leave the lid off for the last 30 mins or use a bit of cornflour. Or if I've added loads of veg to the sauce sometimes I take the meat out, then blend it all up. Makes a really nice thick sauce you know is full of veggies.

    it can do as lamb is quite fatty. If you cant scoop enough off i sometimes lay a slice of bread on top for a couple of seconds which soaks up some more.Or if you are cooking in advance if you cool it and leave it in the fridge overnight the fat hardens so you can just take it off in the morning before you reheat it.. simples!! ;)

    also my friend uses asda smart price curry sauce in the slow cooker with chicken and it makes a really nice curry.. long cooking seems to improve the sauce

    Apologies I am just putting this on here as I am not really sure of the best place to get an answer and I did post it on another bit 2 but here goes anyway
    Hi I am new to the site (well to this bit anyways) and a confessed slow cooker virgin. I have been trawling through all the slow cooker posts and have found them really usefull however, after deciding which recipe to try first, I have come across a bit of a problem. My SC (which is a pretty cheap one) has 4 settings. In the leaflet that comes with it the instructions are

    OFF - switches the appliance off
    LOW - can also be used for heating up cooked food
    HIGH - the normal SC setting. Cooking time is around 7-8 hours
    WARM - keeps recently cooked food warm

    Now my question - if i go out to work (I leave house at 7.30am and dont get back until 5.30-6pm:mad:) should I use the low setting even though it can be used to heat up foods?????
    This has probably been done to death but I cant see the answer anywhere so appologies if I am repeating question :D

    I'm new and my Argos model has the same settings. Each time I've used it the high setting has cooked in 5-6 hours so in your case I'd definitely use Low.
  • In my slow cooker today...... I have chilli made with stewing steak (stewing steak free from my lovely mum) this is the first time I have attempted this recipe but she assures me its yum. :j
