hello everyone! Just got a slow cooker and have been reading so many threads - feel a bit overwhelmed and don't know where to start! I have:

    one onion
    stewing steak

only other veg I've got in are frozen peas and peppers & some fresh potatoes

I have lots of storecupboard ingredients, red wine, tinned tomatoes, herbs, worcestershire sauce, stock cubes etc...

Could someone recommend anything with the above? Just want to try it out but not sure about it with so few veg.

Thanks from a slow cooker novice :)

Yum, steak cooked with onion, red wine, tomatoes, herbs, peppers, worcestershire sauce. You've got everything you need. You could serve the peas and potatoes on the side.

Thanks very much! Would you recommend browning onions and steak first? And also does it matter peppers are frozen?

Sorry for all the questions, I know these must have been asked many times before!

    too many comps..not enough time!

Only thing I ever brown for the slow cooker are sausages. Frozen peppers will be fine.
Real men never follow instructions; after all they are just the manufacturer's opinion on how to put something together. :p

I never brown anything before adding it to the slowcooker.

The ingredients that you have sound perfect, sublime`s suggestion has my mouth watering.:D

Enjoy your slowcooker, you`ll get the hang of it in no time.

i actually love spooky slow cooker sausages.. they are all pale and soft... weirdo i am!!

yesterday i made oxtail soup with some whoopsie oxtail from morrisons.ive never cooked oxtail before, but thought i'd give it a go. I had some stock from the boiled pork i did the other day, plus some garlic, carrot, celery and onion i forgot about it and left it on overnight, but it seems fine.. i took all the meat off and chopped it and blended in the veg then put the meat back.
just in a bowl now waiting for the fat to congeal on the top.. but the bit i did taste was lush and my little boy loved the bits of oxtail i cut off for him this morning... 'more more' was the cry!

    Beef stew?
Chopped onion, stewing steak, cubed potatoes, frozen peas, half a bottle of red wine, 500ml beef stock, mixed herbs, pepper. Slow cook for about 7 hours. Throw in some cornflour/thickening granules near the end of cooking if it needs thickening.

Thanks everyone! It's in there now and smells lovely, looks like it needs a bit of thickening so will put some cornflour in a minute. Really looking forward to it!

Just what I had to hand, steak, onions, carrots, courgettes, broccoli, some frozen veg L&P, stock cubes. Smells good, no idea what it'll taste like. Steaming some of those funny little Anya potatoes to go with it. Can't help thinking they look like fat caterpillars...

Does anyone find that doing lamb in a slow cooker (stew/casserole) makes the dish end up all greasy from the lamb?
