I really want a slow cooker but OH is dead against it because he doesn't like 'things all in the same thing' i.e what he means is, he won't eat casserole because there's more than just meat in the dish (if you understand what I'm trying to say!) so I was wondering what other things can be done in a slow cooker that tempt him to 'let' me have one! I love home-made stews and casseroles and 'winter warmer' type comfort food but he doesn't.
Any suggestions anyone??
Angelic - my kids are just the same so I just cook the meat in the gravy with some veg, when the meat is done I blitz the gravy & veg, then serve other veg on the side. Seems to work in our house.Banana LoversBuy your bananas in bunches of 5 on Sunday. Then arrange them in order of ripeness and write a day of the week on each banana in felt pen, Monday on the ripest, Friday on the greenest to save time making those decisions on a hectic weekday morning0 -
Any tips for cooking sausage casserole please? I've got a packet mix so just need to know a couple of things... Do I brown the sausages first? Do I put the same amount of water which is recommended on the packet mix or should I add less? Will it be ok on low all day whilst I'm at work?
Thanks in advance :beer:Light Bulb Moment 4th January 2009 :eek:Started DMP 1st April 2009 :ADMP mutual support thread member: 267 :j0 -

Sausages taste better (and look more appealing) if you brown them first. I used a packet mix once, and I did put the recommended amount of water in, but then I added all sorts of things to it, so it wasn't worth using the mix in the first place. If you are going to be out all day, you could always thicken it with some flour if necessary when you get in.0 -

sell it to him on the money saving angle for the sunday joint.
I buy the cheapest joints, and the use by the end of the day reduced stuff and SC them for hours.
the first time he has a slow cooked brisket that just melts in his mouth he'll be hooked
But today I made irish stew
left over lamb I had frozen, two carrots and an onion, a lamb stock cube, sundays left over spuds and pearl barley.
filled pot three quarters with boiling water, cooked on low for four hours, added teaspoon of mint, tabelspoon of redcurrant jelly.
huge dinner for four with enough over for my lunch tomorrow.
I LOVE my SC :heartsmil:heartsmil0 -
you can really vary things by playing around with the amount of liquid you use. I take his point about getting fed up of endless soupy casseroles. I love them too but even I get bored of the same texture.
I do one with the big lamb chops (can't remember the name of the cut) where I cook the meat sitting on the veg out of the liquid and then finish in a hot oven to crisp it up. Plus you can drain off the liquid to make into a more interesting gravy. So with a small amount of effort it ends up more like a roast dinner. Might help.0 -
potatoes, onion, herbs and stock,
then corned beef and beans to go with it as the cupboard is very very bare today!:A :j0 -
Iam very new to slow cooking, did beef stew last week and it was fantastic. So tomorrow I plan on this:
3 pork loin chops, half red pepper, 1 onion, some mushrooms, carrots with a bit a chicken stock, salt n pepper.
Will thicken later on - my question is, Do you think this will be tasty or a bit bland? And should I maybe dice the pork?
Thanks. xxJust to win anything would be great!!0
