I'm doing brisket today. I'll brown it first to seal in the juices and then put it in with onions, bay, thyme, beef stock from a cube and a bottle of a rich dark beer called Black Pearl. When it's tender I'll take it out and wrap it in foil. Then I'll decant the stock into a saucepan, use my hand blender to whiz it until smooth and then use bisto granuals if necessary.
Then Beef back in to wait until the roast potatoes and asparagus are ready.

My god that sounds delicious!! How long are you cooking the brisket for and on what heat?

On high for an hour and then down to medium until tender. I don't have to serve at a set time we'll eat when its ready.

My SC has been working overtime this weekend!!.... Yesterday I cooked a shoulder of lamb with a small bottle of redwine with some whole garlic cloves. I'm going to use the meat to make a batch of curries for the freezer. Next time I won't bother with the wine and just use the stock I'm saving and freezing this time :D

Overnight I cooked a chilli and again I've divided it up into meals for the freezer. Then I just take one out and buy a hot jacket potato or a portion of rice in work (40p!) to go with it for lunch.

Today I'm cooking a bacon/gammon joint with an onion and coca cola :T That should carve up into a few meals for dinner or lunches this week.

I feel really pleased with the use I've got out of it just this weekend! :A

    Hi Ladies,

(I'm just assuming that this is a all women thread!!)

I really want a slow cooker but OH is dead against it because he doesn't like 'things all in the same thing' i.e what he means is, he won't eat casserole because there's more than just meat in the dish (if you understand what I'm trying to say!) so I was wondering what other things can be done in a slow cooker that tempt him to 'let' me have one! I love home-made stews and casseroles and 'winter warmer' type comfort food but he doesn't.

    Any suggestions anyone??

i awlways find when i use a slow cooker for cassarole etc the sauce is always too thin

lst time i did it i removd the pot and put on the gas ring to mix in some corwnflour to thicken and yes u guessed it .......................BANG !

i guess u cannot use them on stove tops

how do you get round this problem ?

I always sprinkle 1 to 2 heaped tablespoons flour over the meat and veg at the beginning before adding the liquid. I just use ordinary flour and it works for me.

    Thanks Sublime,

I thought it could be used for alot of stuff but I wasn't sure. I'm assuming all you guys love your sc's but I was just wondering if they're good on electricity? I want one really to stop using the oven so much because I hate it when the kitchen is to warm!

I put a joint of beef in the SC this morning. Not sure what else to do with it yet so looking for some inspiration in the threads. It will probably be the usual roast stuff though :)

There are differing opinions regarding this. Some people say it takes as much energy as using a lightbulb, other people say the same as an oven:

I bought an electricity measure thing last week, when I try it out this week I will run it on the SC to get an idea and post results here. HTH
