With the chicken yes I do brown it first as it seals in the flavour as well as browns it, but you don't have to!
In my slowcooker today is a chopped up large marrow (overgrown courgette from garden:o ), 3 sweet potatoes, 2 onions, washed and trimmed, potato peel (was going to make remoska chips) 1 leek, 1 large carrot all chopped up in lots of veg stock. We are going to have a lot of cream of veg soup tomorrow!:jOur days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.

I do all the cooking for the SC in the kitchen, put it all into the pot, put on lid, and take the whole pot out to the garage and switch on out there. The smell is kept out there because I hate the smell of stews cooking, especially in the winter as I can't open all the windows etc. So when I come home the cooking smells are enticing and not all invasive! I sometimes leave the SC on low all night. Hope it gives you another idea.0

Our slow cooker had its first use today (purchased the £10 tesco 3.5 litre yesterday) I am amazed
I have a new toy and love it!!!
We had Lamb shank, vegetable stock, rosemary, oregano and bay leaves. It was yummyeven my son tried some of the lamb so it must be good as he will normally only eat chicken!!!

I'm using mine for the first time today to make homemade soup with veg, broth mix and bacon. I'm hoping someone can help out a bit... the bacon is smoked value bacon bits, and when I opened it out, I found that it had loads of fat!!! I trimmed most of it off, but wonder if there is anything I can do with the fat rather than bin it? It seems such a waste but I've no idea what I can do with it!! Any advice please?
*update - soup was lovely, I had expcted to be able to freeze some but it's all gone!! yum. I now have a bit of brisket, potatoes, turnip, carrot and onions, sprinkled with oxo cube on low setting to cook overnight. What a brilliant new toy!!skint but in luv :kisses2:0 -

Yesterday I used value diced turkey to make a turkey curry in the SC. It came out lovely. The meat wasn't too strong tasting and whereas last time I used it, it was a bit chewy, done in the slow cooker it just fell apart. Will definitely do that one again
Will also now be trying the turkey drumstick at some point tooworking on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -

Today I have a whole chicken (ASDA £2 one - finally got a couple - it only took 4 visits!) in mine, with a little water in the bottom of the crock.
I've done this a few times now and must say BIG THANKS to you all for suggesting doing whole joints in the SC - I previously only used it for soups, stews, casseroles etc. but whole chicken or turkey leg done in the SC the meat just falls off the bone and is so much easier to use, and the resulting 'stock' is great as it's ready for use in gravy or sauce straight away.
Not sure what we'll do with this one tonight - I like it turned into 'cheat's rissotto' (and flavoured rice was 5 packets for £1 in ASDA the other week so I got 10 packets!) but DH prefers old fash potato & veg on his plate....The best advice you can give your children: "Take responsibility for your own actions...and always Read the Small Print!"

I've thrown a heap of tomatoes in mine today, fortunately our toms have been amazing this year so I've been drying them and making chutney and relish with yet more as well as eating them fresh! BUT I am just sick of the sight of them now :rotfl: I couldn't slice another one if I tried so I blitzed some with garlic, carrots, parsley, basil and worcester sauce and stuck it all into the slowcooker for soup
with a bit of chicken stock...I'll let you know if its edible!!
