I want to cook a type of modified shepherds pie in the slow cooker using potato slices rather than mash. If I were to put a pyrex bowl in the middle of the slow cooker with the water and potatoes in it, then pile the rest of the pie ingredients around it to cook, would that work?

Do I need to raise the bowl off the floor of slow cooker in some way or can it sit straight on top of the ceramic slow cooker pot?

Sorry no idea if it would work but the general advice seems to be not to put the pyrex straight in the slow cooker but to rest it on an upturned jam jar lid or upturned saucer or something. Not tried it myself though :o

    Chicken creole in mine today.

I use one of these fold-out metal vegetable steamers to sit the pyrex in, and that has worked OK.

Could someone help me with a quick question please.

Why not put the pyrex with the pie ingredients in the middle, fill SC with water and cook the potato slices in the water outside? Seems less messy to me, and once the potato slices are done you can put them straight on top of the pie. (But maybe you want to achieve something different.)

Cornflour mixed with cold water is what I usually do and it works well.

Sorry, got no advice (unless you have any McDougals thickening granules to hand?), but just wanted to say this really amused me.

I have a recipe for sweet and sour in the slow cooker and it says to mix cornflour with a small cup of water - add to pot and put slow cooker on high for half an hour or so to thicken ;)

I used plain flour instead of corn as I didn't have any :o

gonna do mince tonight. really must get one of those slow cooker cook books & do something 'different'! there's quite a few in Luton WHSmith :)

I knew this would happen if I mentioned there were lots of good books in my local shop... Needless to say I went to WHSmith yesterday, and there were 4 rubbish 4.99 slow cooker books, and only 2 good 9.99 (lots of pictures, like to see what I'm aiming for!) books - bonus - all cookery books are buy one get one half price at the moment. ;)
