It should be no problem zippychick (in my book at least), as the next day you cook it again for several hours, which 'sterilises' it once again. And then you eat it hot. Sounds perfect to me.
Thanks I started to worry I might be poisoning my dinner guests

Can I ask a quick question about slow cookers please. I'm intending to buy one from Argos (I have some vouchers). I live on my own and and not likely to want to cook complete chickens or large joints of meat. Would I be better off with a round cooker or an oval one?

    Hi.
My Oh bought it for me probably hoping to have a more varied diet.
No I don't cook stews and casseroles as there's not a lot I could put in them.
I usually have potato's' boiled, mashed or chipped. Most meat except mince. Sandwiches, rolls, tins of baked beans, soup etc.
I never manage 5-a-day. I snack more than I eat a meal yet my OH will eat absolutely anything.
Yesterday's meals were toast, chicken & chips, ham rolls and tea & biscuits.

    Hi matphil
I don't like any of the recipies in the book that came with it so I need some help.
The book that came with your slow cooker is indicative of the types of recipes that are suitable for cooking.
If you don't eat the following, I really think you may be struggling to get the best out of your new slow cooker.
I don't like vegetables (except potatoes and peas), onions, herbs, spices, rice, pasta, beans, spagetti, lentils, curry, garlic, fruit or eggs.

Maybe you can do braising steak to have with potatoes or stewing steak to then put into dish or plate pies, using your own or ready made pastry.
Chunks of chicken or pork, with potatoes and tinned tomatoes & mushrooms (if you like them).
To be honest, without herbs you may find the food bland.

I think it may have been a false economy to buy the slow cooker, but perhaps your OH could use it to cook several meals at a time, and have the more varied diet herself.

Anybody out there with more ideas?

Maphil, you could try the ribs recipe posted a while back or the chicken wing recipe Drea posted a couple of days ago. As Polly cat suggests you could try braising steak, or even just cooking your roast meats in it to. Cant remember exactly what you hated but there is a recipe for gammon soaked in coke, which from memory can be cooked without veg. Good luck.

Adapted sausage provencale in the SC today - adapted from a recipe on here to what was in the fridge and minus the courgette and pepper. Added a few carrots and extra onion instead lovely with the chilli addition! Very nice tea! Many thanks

In mine today - 2 packs of lamb chops (2 for a fiver at the butchers, plus a pack of neck bones which OH decided in his wisdom should go in as well) some mushrooms, some onions and 2 jars of Smartprice Curry Sauce. Accompanied by 2 packs of Ainsley Harriot Golden Vegetable basmati rice from Approved Foods - already fed 4, and there's enough for another 4 :)

I cooked a bacon joint in mine today for 5 hours (high) which fell apart when taken out. I shredded this then returned it to the water that it had been cooked in then I added diced carrot & turnip, chopped onion, cup of split peas & cup of red lentils, salt & pepper & it will now cook on low through the night. So hopefully I will be left with a bacon & lentil soup.
1st time Ive tried this so hope it turns out ok.

Could someone help me with a quick question please.

I want to cook a type of modified shepherds pie in the slow cooker using potato slices rather than mash. If I were to put a pyrex bowl in the middle of the slow cooker with the water and potatoes in it, then pile the rest of the pie ingredients around it to cook, would that work?

Do I need to raise the bowl off the floor of slow cooker in some way or can it sit straight on top of the ceramic slow cooker pot?
