Hi Kellitots, don't put too much liquid in if you are doing a whole chicken as it'll give out lots of its own juices.
Too much liquid and it cooks really well but it'll just (quite literally)fall apart when you go to lift it out.How does a brown cow give white milk, when it only eats green grass?0 -
Hi kellitots!
I did my first whole chicken in the SC this week, didn't add anything other than S&P, I am still raving about how nice it was - I hope you enjoy yours just as much0 -
Your Lasagne done in the slow cooker will be fine, the only bit I used to have a problem with is getting the pasta sheets to fit my oval dish:rolleyes: As no ones see them I now just break big bits up of pasta and arrange round the edges. With mine (don't know whether yours will be the same) I add a bit more liquid as I find it can dry up a but more than doing it in the oven

 didn't get to try the lasagne, as we overslept Sat morning, and DH had to go help his mum with something, so the DIY was all behind and no time to make the lasagne. Beef went into freezer & pizzas came out for tea....
Beef came back out of freezer last nite and is now (I hope!) bubbling gently in the SC with 2 tins tomatoes, 2 chopped onions, a handful of lentils and a stock cube :j .
When I get home I'll add chopped peppers and mushrooms.
Just hope I've got enough liquid in to take account of the lentils - I did add some extra water, as I normally do this on the hob and I know the lentils suck up quite a bit.....
I don;t mind if there's too much liquid - I can always add some porridge oats!
This WILL do us at least 2 meals, as I'm gonna take out some of the meat mixture (with a slotted spoon so not too much liqid) and put it in a dish ready for 'cottage pie' on Thursday - BEFORE I serve the rest up as bolognaise - that way DH won't eat all the rest as '2nd helpings' this time.....The best advice you can give your children: "Take responsibility for your own actions...and always Read the Small Print!"

We had sausage casserole tonight, we were both late back and within 20 minutes of walking in the door we'd eaten....It's only the second time we've used the SC as I only bought it a couple of weeks ago, my old one died years ago. Hubby set it going at lunchtime as he often gets home during the day. Keep up the recipes....I'd forgotten how fab slow cookers are!Piglet

Finally got a slow cooker - 1.8l, a tenner from Asda.
Today I cooked brown rice and lentils with some stock and a few bits of veg and herbs. We had it with salad and hm bread tonight, tomorrow we'll have it as burgers with fried potatoes, and I'll make a loaf with the rest and pop it in the freezer for another day. Easy, very healthy, and extremely cheap!
So far - very happy with my tenner.0 -
Just wanted to say I love this thread! some great ideas.
I was wondering if anyone had any ideas what I can cook in my slow cooker using a glut of hoem grown tomatoes (given to me by FIL)?
Also does anyone have a recipe for risotto that I can use for my slow cooker?
Many thanks0 -

Have to report Success from yesterday!:j
Added peppers & mushrooms to 'bolognaise' when I got home, turned to 'high' for half an hour - removed enough meat& veg mixture for 'cottage pie' tomorrow. The remiander was quite liquid (and the lentils had turned to mush so DH wouldn't notice them - as usual - LOL!), so I part-cooked pasta spirals then added them to the SC, mixed all in together, put grated cheese on top, cooked on high for an hour.
Resulting 'pasta bake' went down very well, even with DH! Enough for 2nds and there's 2 (smallish) portions left for him & me to take to work for lunch! :j
Nothing in the SC todaybut I am going to try out a recipe I read here somewhere for 'savoury bread & butter pudding' using up some eggs, ham & cheese before we go on hols
. Thought I'd better make it in the oven tho' as I've not tried it before - and I need to make a few fairy-cakes or similar for DH lunchbox tomorrow & Fri as we've run out of goodies!

I need some inspiration!
I've got a 6.5 litre slow cooker (huge but was only a fiver so can't complain)
This week we've had ... beef pie; spag bol ; salmon kebabs; chilli beef wraps ; lentil and bacon soup with fish fingers; roast pork.
I need some veggie inspiration .. have got tub of cherry tomatoes ; 2 leeks ; 1 large marrow; couple of peppers ; courgettes; red onions; various dried beans; fresh sweetcorn; cubed and frozen swede. Oh and 1 1/2 sweet cabbages and a big bag of fresh spinach. And loiads of potatoes.
Anything jumping out at anyone there? The kids eat practically anything BUT won't touch cabbage (unless it's so well hidden they don't know it's there) and I think they might feel the same about cabbage ....That's Numberwang!0
