I looked through alot of this thread but can't find the answer so just gonna ask. What's so good about slow cookers that they get a thread on the money saving expert site? I have had a s/c for about a year stuck in my cupboard. I've only cooked in it about twice. The things i cooked turned out nice but it just seems easier to do a casserole in the oven. Am i missing something? I know you can use cheaper meat cuts but i don't really eat much but chicken and mince. Seems to be loads of reciepes for mince and veg also. So what advantage is there to using the slow cooker over conventional oven cooking? Also i usually substitute mince for quorn or soya mince. Does anyone know if you can do this in a slow cooker?

    Hiya,
    Good questions!
Why do I like my slow-cooker?
I find mine cheaper to run than heating up the whole oven if I only want to cook one dish.
It is quite safe to leave on all day and go out - which I wouldn't feel quite safe doing with the gas cooker.
It is nice to come home to a house smelling of lovely food, and not have to start cooking from scratch.
Cheaper cuts of meat are made more tender by cooking slowly.
As a side benefit, no liquid is lost during cooking, so most dishes are quite 'wet' if you use the same amount of liquid you would normally - I tend to do this deliberately and spoon off a lot of the liquid and use as a soup for my lunch the next day!

& yes, you can cook with quorn/soya mince/veg proteins and most veg in them. I do tend to find that I have to cut veg up smaller than I would otherwise, so that it cooks through OK, but that is the only thing different.

Hope this helps and that you decide to give yours another go!

can I put a whole chicken in the slo cooker and how much liquid do I put in
and would it be chicken stock that I use ???
and can I just put it straight in without browning etc I'm assuming I can ??

I put a whole chicken in mine with just enough water to cover the bottom of the crockpot.

I don't bother putting any stock in there as I just tend to cook it for meat for sandwiches. I'm sure a lot of people put other stuff in to make some stock, I ame just lazy really, shall have to mend my ways. :o

I just chuck it in with a bit of water and leave it on low for about 7 hours.
