Red lentils are great for bulking out bolognaise. I also use them in chilli and curries.

Bolognaise slow-cooked is lovely - enjoy!

    Hi!

Want to try this - do i need to soak the lentils first if they are dried ones??

    Any help greatly appreciated

You should soak your lentils for a while. If I don't have time to soak I rinse a couple of times to get the grime out and then I boil in a small pot on the cooker for about 5 mins. This way the lentils completely melt away into whatever you're cooking and nobody knows.

For me the slow cooker has been on constantly this weekend. Bought 2 for £6 mince and 2 for £6 casserole stew from Sainsbury yesterday and I'm waiting to put my 7th meal into the freezer. I've worked out it cost £16 for the lot. Have used lentils, oats, carrots, onions, peas, garlic, tomato puree and oxos and made 2 x bolognaise, 2 x mince (1 for doughballs, 1 for potatoes), 1 stew with baby boilers, 1 beef with onion and butter (this is fab in the SC and served with pasta)

We have just enjoyed a lovely meal of pork and apple casserole that has been in the slow cooker for about 7 hours. It was so succulent. I popped dumplings in there in the last 40 minutes or so. Yum!

Hi, I've been lurking on this forum for the past few weeks and am trying to be OS. I bought a SC before xmas, but am using it today for the first time. In it I have:-

1 x Beef on the bone (reduced to £4.99)
    Frozen mixed peppers
    Few shakes of dried basil
Rose wine (xmas prezzy my DS opened with his mate without my knowledge and didn't drink it - so I froze it in ice cube trays)
    Tin of value chopped tomatoes
    1 x onion
    Water

It has been on since about 1pm (ish), DS says it smells really good (I have the dreaded cold and am bunged up so can't smell it very well!)
Also have some value sweet potatoes roasting away! Hope it turns out ok;)

Ok have just eaten said meal and am happy to say success! (well, we enjoyed it lol), only problem was the stock wasn't thick, added cornflour at the end, but perhaps should have added it earlier!

Thanks for advice re lentils! Looking forward to trying it out!

Today have made beef in red wine

    - Stewing steak
    - 2 carrots
    - 2 onions
    - 2 potatoes
    - 1 stick of celery
    - 2 oxo cubes
    - Water
    - Red wine (1/3 bottle of leftover from last night!)

Browned meat in a pan and drained and then added all ingredients into SC on low all day - added gravy granules at end to thicken

Lovely!! New to MSE and Slow Cooking!
