  • I haven't used my SC for a while, but after being enthused by all the SC fans in OS, I found a few bits and pieces of veg from the fridge and added some stuff from the cupboard and we'll see what happens. It's a bit of a mish mash, but the things that went in are:
    - bits of butternut squash
    - 1 leek
    - 1 carrot
    - 1 courgette
    - 1 parsnip
    - 1 chilli
    - 1 onion
    - few fresh herbs (not sure what...)
    - 1 tin tomatoes
    - end of a packet of red lentils
    - end of a packet of pearl barley
    - borlotti beans (from freezer which I cooked a few weeks ago)
    - s&p

I hope it turns out edible...

I made potato & leek soup in my slow cooker last week and it was great.
Eat your heart out, Mrs Baxter. :rotfl:

What exactly did you put in?
    What did it taste like?
Did you put seasoning other than the coriander in?

Glad to hear that your dog is signed up to MS OldStyle. :rotfl:

Beef strogonoff in there today - nearly done. Will put it in the fridge overnight and re-heat it tomorrow, as I think all casseroles improve from being allowed to "mature" for a day or so.

Thank, Gert, but it's the sweetness that I'm trying to keep out.

Do you think that braised red cabbage is just one of those dishes that needs that touch of sweetness?

Damn! Tesco were selling red cabbage reduced last night. I wish I'd bought one and I could have tried it out.

I used to make it without any sugar, just a splash of red wine vinegar and a touch of spice for a kick. If you cook it long enough it kind of gets sweet on its own, like onions do. :D
  • Lois and CK - I add enough water to just cover the bones when I make stock. Good luck. You will get there!

In my slow cooker today -

Huge packet of "diced" casserole beef from reduced shelf
    2 cans tomatoes and herbs
    2 cans drained kidney beans
    2 sliced peppers
should have been onions and garlic but visitors are allergic
    1 tsp cumin
    1 tsp hot chilli powder
    1 heaped tsp salt
1 rather soft carrot, but don't tell anyone
1 dsp cornflour mixed with water at the end to thicken

In mine today: 1 turkey carcasse along with 3 chicken carcasses and the trimmings from lots of veggies (peelings, stump ends etc). They can stay in there all day and then I'll strain/cool this evening before dividing up into containers for the freezer.

It's also freed up quite a bit of space in the freezer :D.
