Which vacuum cleaner should I buy?

  • Fascinating thread! I am looking to replace my 3rd Animal Dyson which has lost the desire to pick up anything. It looks to me like Henry and Miele are potential replacements for me! Depending on what comes up in the sales, Henry seems a lot cheaper so I may well try one of them...
Thanks for all your posts everyone. They've been really helpful to me! :-)

Then wash the pre-motor filter, change the post-motor filter, if necessary remove the cyclone top and pressure wash it. Then check the suction path for blockages.
Is the brushbar still turning? If not you may need a new belt, or possibly a clutch change. If the suction at the hose end is OK, then you have a blockage between the cleaner head and the cyclone, probably the bottom hose, if it's a DC07.
Dysons will go on forever, but they do need basic maintenance to maintain suction. It's insane just to discard it when the suction starts to go. The only possible terminal failure is that of the motor, and even they are replaceable for about £20.

Henry convert here too! Having wasted good money on other rubbish vacuums. My best friends and sister have them now too and we all love them.

We have a Henry. They are quite robust - ours even survived falling out of the back of our car and being dragged around a round-about by his flex (OH hadn't shut the boot properly). The only downside really is that he has bags - I buy a cheaper version from Morrisons, which are fine.

You can easily 'empty ' the bags! I have my Henry for almost a year now and my dh accidentally sucked up one very important tiny wee screw in it. I spent a mingin' hour on a freezing day out on the patio hunting through all the fluff etc which I pulled out bit by bit!! Ended up going over all the dirt with a magnet and eventually found it! I just put the emptied bag back in Henry and it's absolutely fine. May not be such a good idea if you have stinky dogs tho.
Still have the rest of the new bags that came with it, and as someone said in an earlier reply, you don't even need to use bags. Just use it bagless and empty when necessary.

I bought a Hetty and hated it so gave it to my daughter who loves it and I went back to a Dyson.

Have you tried using it without the bags in? One of the ladies I clean for never uses them as she has 2 large, hairy dogs who moult constantly. I have to empty it out weekly and I just tip it into the bin for her. I used to use bags, but having seen her machine cope without them, I wouldn't hesitate to copy her if I had a Henry again.

  • I've just sent my vax back as not had it more than 2 months and blocks constantly and broke the multi tool head!
Bought a cheapish bissel from argos does a much better job and no blocking, before that i had a dyson04 which used to cut out and too heavy for me to do the stairs.

My Miele cat and dog is ten years old now and still works as good as the day I bought it

I don't even use the turbo heads as the normal head works great on not only my dogs hair but mine as well ( I'm sure I cast more then the dog )
  • I've got a cheap own brand pull along from a supermarket and it's brilliant.
I looked at some of the other brands but found them too heavy to use.
btw mine only cost about £30 too.
    xx
  • I've tried them all over the years. If you've got the money Miele is the one to go for, heavy but brilliant suction - far superior to any of the others. Wouldn't use anything else now.
