Which vacuum cleaner should I buy?

Hi there,
I have just about had enough of my V@x vacuum cleaner. Despite the good reviews I read before I bought it, it has been the worst purchase ever. It is heavy, cumbersome to use and keeps cutting out after about 10 minutes continual use.
So what to replace it with? DH would like a Dyson, but I think they are pricey. I think Henry would be a good idea.
So ladies (and gents), what would you recommend? We have carpets, not laminate, just for info.
Many thanks,
tjp

Henry every single time.
I used to work for a electrical place who repaired vacs, and 90% of them were Dyson.
Ive had a Henry for donkeys years an it's the best little workhorse
thats why builders use them, they just go on and on and on.
Silly, but they follow you round like a little lap dog, I've even been known to talk to mine. lolmake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Thanks McKneff,
I think I am going to try and persuade DH about a Henry. He is worried about storing one so I shall have to clear out a cupboard first

I have a henry vac, upstairs and a hetty vac downstairs best investment ever.Mortgage: Aug 12 £114,984.74 - Jun 14 £94000.00 = Total Payments £20984.74

Depends.
We had a Henry when we just had cats, It was dependable and reliable and light. Now we have dogs, and more mud hand we have gone back to a more expensive miele. It's not as reliable, but is serviced by them very well, and it's cleaning power is second to none I have tried.
Cons are that the pet/turbo brush is so effective that I spend at least fifteen minutes a week de clogging it from my long hair and other long bits that get in it so it can do its job and it's not the lightest.
But it is very, very good. We have an upstairs one and a downstairs one now, the downstairs one being very old, over ten years , and still beautifully effective.0 -
The best vacuums are made by Miele, my Cat and Dog model works really well. That gum you like is coming back in style.0

My office uses a Henry at work, but I have a Dyson at home. For all that someone has lots of experience of repairing them, I've had mine for 12 years now and the only repair I ever needed was a new hose when someone trod on it and tore a small hole in it.Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps....

Cylinder or upright?
If an upright, get a recon DC07 from somewhere like Man Vacs, much better than the new Dysons. Around the £100 mark.No free lunch, and no free laptop

I had to do the same with my D*son turbo-brush - it's a pain with the long hair getting tangled in it and there's one bit that I just can't get it out of!
If you've got pets - dogs especially - then personally I don't think you can beat a D*son for the money .... but I do find mine very heavy and am now really struggling to do the stairs
So ... my VSP money this year is hopefully going to raise enough for one of these http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/dyson-cordless-416-commercial.html
Yes, I'd still need to use the big one for a more thorough clean now & then but being able to have a quick once around on a daily basis would be fantastic!

We have one of those cordless Dyson vacs - in all honesty, it's great on hard floors but it's not brilliant on carpet. We have ours upstairs (mainly carpet) and we got it because we have dogs and kids and the house is up for sale, we wanted an easy way to keep it showroom style (hahahaaa! As if that will ever happen!).
Also, the filter needs cleaning monthly and the warranty is one year rather than the usual five, which is a shame. And the kids have long hair - the brush bar clogs up constantly!
It's good for getting into tight corners mind you, and is really light.
I'm still glad we got it, but if we'd had the space I think another smaller upright vac (maybe the smaller telescopic corded Dyson) would have been better for us, with it being carpeted.
Our Dyson DC07 is on it's last legs after a half hearted service last year by Dyson after the motor went. I would love to try another brand so will watch this with interest!0
