I do hope so. In 1980 my first marriage broke up leaving me with 15 month old son and I had to learn pretty quickly how to budget - and to stick to it. When I first started getting Martin's email, many many years later, I felt chuffed and at the same time slightly disappointed. You see, most of what Martin was passing onto folks - I was mostly doing anyway!! So I was chuffed at being quite smart - but disappointed that I wasn't saving as much money as others. Weird huh?
Anyway, when moving into the homeowner arena that's when Martin's newsletter really came to into play and by following the email I've been able to switch and save at the right times for all sorts of things.
This challenge opened my eyes to how the BS's work - mostly against us I feel - but gave me insights for the future, such as being mortgage free. So the fact that we're not going to be MFi3 in April, we don't see it as failure but rather a challenge that we will keep going until we are.
Of course, regaining full health (both mental & physical) is a also a challenge. A magnet I have on my desk lamp says "I'd give up chocolate - but I'm not a Quitter". Well, I have always gotten through things - some better than others - but that's because I'm most definitely not a quitter. AND I DO NOT INTEND TO START NOW!

Well done LookAfterThePennies for paying off your mortgage. Congrats to to everyone who is getting close, indeed well done for everyone who has managed to keep it going so long. Only another 6 months to go!!
I've been neglecting my mortgage overpayments and have been dipping into our offset too recently. We've had the side garden landscaped (to match the rear garden we had done during year 1 of the MFi3 challenge) and we've just started on the front garden (widening the driveway and lanscaping the garden). This, coupled with a new boiler and some additional fitted kitchen units have pretty much helped to stall our MFi3 quest. I've also been blitzing our pension plans and ISAs, so not much left for the mortgage.
However, we've pretty much finished our house renovations and so we're back on track and determined to have a final push with the mortgage.
Good luck to everyone else over the next 6 months!!!0 -

Well, today is another milestone on my way to our forever house.
Yesterday afternoon I FINALLY exchanged on selling here, to complete today (nothing like having a bit of time in between exchange and completion, then!). So, I've negotiatied to move my stuff on Tuesday, as it was way too late to sort it for today. The people buying here are buying most of my big furniture, so there's only a small lorry-load to move.
We haven't yet exchanged on the new house, but completion is planned for 30 Sep so... I'M MORTGAGE-FREE FOR 18 DAYS! Fingers crossed this will now go smoothly, as it's been a rollercoaster for six months. Haven't decided what to do with my sig yet, the new mortgage will be huge and the start of a ten-year plus challenge.
Perhaps I should sign off this challenge with a balance of £11,100? That will help your figures, then I can skip over to the MFiT2 challenge for my own part 2?Mortgage Free thanks to ill-health retirement0 -
