I've been a busy bee today and over the last week. We've been out picking the hedgerows and I'm busy making jams and syrups. I need to collect more jars and bottles so I can make some cordials and finish off the jams.
DH and I have also made some sloe gin. We've a bottle of vodka ready to turn into something delicious too.
Over the next year we will collect up enough jam jars etc to see us through a whole year and then next year we will be able to make our entire years worth of stuff for the cost of the sugar and the energy.
Sloe jam has gone down very well. We found a plum tree today on our way home from foraging and although we only got 1lb of plums that has been converted to 2 jars of jam.
DH's boss has lots of trees etc in his garden and no time to trim them or pick their offerings. We spent an hour there tonight and were able to collect lots of kindling. DH may suggest that we will start tidying up his woodlands and cutting back his trees in exchange for being able to use some of the land for growing our stuff (onions etc!). We can also start building up his winter wood store while we are collecting ours too. The kids think it's fab picking stuff and have been quite helpful. They are really enjoying halping make the jams and eating them but it's a bit scary with the boiling sugar bit!
I reckon that we'll save a couple of ££££s doing this each year and being very MSE I borrowed my Aunties pressure cooker as I didn't have a pan big enough. Me and my husband were planning a weekend to London using Tesco Clubcard vouchers so I entered quite a lot of competitions for tickets around that specific time so we had things to do whilst there without spending a fortune......then at the last minute we decided to go to Edinburgh as I had never been there - but I actually won a few pairs of tickets for things like Prom In The Park etc!! So I sold them on Ebay...and made £70 which I paid off the mortgage yesterday!
Also ordered a redemption statement just out of curiousity as we are wondering if we can get a better deal elsewhere....Dream of being mortgage free....

My mortgage was paid yesterday and I have updated my signature accordingly. I'm now just under the £98k mark at £98,998.32 - a long way to go yet, but progress all the same.
I also converted my Mortgage Pig savings from silver and coppers into notes. I've been using a mortgage pig since we started the Mortgage Free challenge, and everytime it gets full-ish I sort it into those plastic bags supplied by the bank and put them into a shoebox (and put the remaining bits and bobs of coins back into the piggy). To my surprise I netted £80 from all the bags in the shoebox. I'm hopeful to clear £100 by the end of the challenge, which I'm going to use to treat us all* to a celebrationary meal to mark the end of MFi3.
*By "all", I mean my family, not everyone in the Mortgage Free in Three challenge! :eek:0 -
Well, we finally exchanged contracts today on the purchase of our beautiful forever house, so I'm off to the Mortgage Free in Three Part 2 challenge with a very chunky £300k+ mortgage. Good luck to everyone for the 'final push' of this - my move wouldn't have been possible without the huge reduction I managed in the mortgage on this challenge.Mortgage Free thanks to ill-health retirement0

We'd be lucky to get a packet of crisps and a can of juice form Lidl if you had to buy the original 134 members something to eat!
