Unfortunately, this code has expired but thanks anyway.

Just went to this page https://www.findmypast.co.uk/account/pay/special and added the code DISPCRED and got 20 more credits.

Excellent, thanks for the tip about the extra 20 credits.
I have now gone back as far as 1785 on my mothers side.

Is there a website available that helps you link up to other family trees?

Ancestry is probably the best one for that. They do a 14 day free trial or if you buy Family Tree Maker (software for keeping records) there's usually a 3 or 6 month free period of membership, which is a much cheaper way of doing it. Look for last year's version of the software being sold off cheaply if you want to do it that way.

Mundia is actually a sister site of Ancestry and so contains all the same public trees as Ancestry does, although it lets you contact their owners for free, which the main Ancestry site doesn't.

I also use Geni, which I think has become almost totally free now. I've met many relatives through it because the profiles of distant relatives show up in Google searches (which is, of course, invaluable in modern researching!) and people get in touch to find out more, or correct my mistakes!

I also typed in the long list of Daily Mail codes and was really excited when they were accepted on the DM site, it wasn't until I got my email and tried to put them into the FMP site that I got a message saying that the offer had expired 31 December 2012!!

[FONT=&quot]Unfortunately the MAIL promotional code has now expired.

As for Public Records - if you are in London I used to go to the Finsbury Square office to physically look through the registers but I'm sure that things have moved on and Free BMD rings a bell.
