Many women got married ‘back in the day’ because they were pregnant and it was the done thing for the man to make an honest women of her. Probably the same reason why women got married so young as well!

Those unlucky enough not to have the man marry her were sent away to homes for unmarried mothers or to family who lived out in the country and quite often the baby would be given up for adoption
