What she wouldn't have done was shag two blokes, finish with one, tell the other she wasn't sure who the father is, not bother making any commitment re getting a home or making a stable relationship with the 'father', alienate people around her and generally act like an irresponsible biatch. In those days if you got pregnant you got married. Or faced being locked up somewhere.. :( We don't want to go back to those times, but looking around, I do think the pendulum might have swung a bit too far in the other direction.
So you're saying women have become more devious in this time ;)

According to the 1851 census one of my GGGm's occupation was

concubine (4 kids with the same man)

Amongst that branch of the family it is only after 1880 that I find women marrying who are not pregnant. Prior to that any couple having a their first child more than 8 month into the marriage have one or two already.

On the other side there were persistant rumours that the eldest was not the child of the first husband. According to several sources, GGM dated T for some time. They had some sort of row and he went into the forces and went abroad. Very shortly after she married A and 5 months later had her first child. At about the time A died, T came back from abroad and they married 12 months and a day after A's death.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

A lot of people think that everyone in the past got married and then had children but that wasn't always so. Most people were too poor to get married and set up a household until they were mid to late 20s. To think that they all stayed celibate until then is unrealistic!

In some country areas it was traditional to wait until the woman was pregnant or had the first child before getting married because having children was so important for the future of the family. Children's labour was an essential part of keeping a small farm or other business running.
  • It's my niece's birthday tomorrow, we've bought her presents and her christmas presents not wrapped them so her mum can decide what she can have for her birthday and what she can have for her christmas there are a few extra bits for the other kiddie she has too (not my brothers)

My folks tried to take the presents round at the weekend no one was in so we facebooked her as we don't have her number and she said to call round last night which I did and waited for about 20 minutes outside her house no one was in again. So we're stuck with these presents and don't know what to do now we've made 2 trips into a town we don't go near to deliver and no one is in.

This is what it will be like for you if you don't find out whether this child is your son's or not. You will get attached to this child for it only to be ripped away from you.

We probably won't get to see her this year but we always send presents for her.

  • Well the presents got dropped off on Thursday she had a birthday party yesterday which non of us was invited to. I was talking to her before on facebook and I asked her if she liked her presents and she said we didn't get her any and we haven't for years.

I told her we send every year even if we don't see her (it's the truth) and she said really? as in she didn't believe me. So I don't know what her mum or my brother have been telling her. TBH it's really gutted me I don't know what to do now regarding presents or even contact anymore.
