Tesco mushy peas were definitely 4p a tin for a while - we bought 20! Aldi's were the same price but I was put off by the colouring in it (brilliant blue anyone?!)
    My debt free diary | Post Office loan: £2131 1429.38 | Barclaycard: £4429 1988.12 | Paypal Credit £322.71 574.91 | Monzo Flex £169.03 |

Total £4151.44 | £2900.30 of £7051.74 paid off since diary started October 2024.
  • I find tesco basic jam and marmalade good value, and also sainsbug 29p teabags.

I also use soap in the bath or shower, rather than shower gel or bubble bath, you cab get 3 or 4 bars in a supermarket pack for about 45p. I also use cheap baby shampoo or shower gel in hand wash dispensers in the bath room and kitchen. These cost well under 50p and last for ages.

  • Thank you to everyone who's recommended Sainsbury's Basics teabags (I'll go back and hit the 'Thanks' button in a bit). I like exceptionally strong tea and have always been reluctant to try cheaper tea, but will give it a go. (I suppose at that price I would save even if I resorted to using two bags per cup! One economy measure I'd never consider is re-using teabags, not because of the 'stingy' stigma but just because a decent strong cup is one little luxury I'm not willing to give up.)

    My own recommendations:
Sainsbury's Basics Sweet Pickle (like Branston): 24p
    Ditto Pickled Onions 31p
    Ditto Lemon Curd 22p

The Basics vinegar is very good but has recently taken a huge jump in price from 13p to 22p - admittedly still very cheap but the increase is ridiculous.

In Aldi, not under 50p but highly recommended are:
Sea Minerals Foam Bath 55p for a litre (I use it for filling pump dispensers for handwashing)
    Carino 3 in 1 shower gel/shampoo/conditioner, 89p
    Choceur Hazelnut Heaven chocolate 59p
Life is mainly froth and bubble

    Kindness in another’s trouble,
    Courage in your own.

The value cooking stuff is fine I think. TBH I (and DH) have gone off a lot of chocolate apart from the really expensive stuff these days- it's like the recipe for bog standard chocolate has got more synthetic or something?

I know it's way over price at 99p but Moser Roth 70% dark chocolate from Aldi is amazing.

10 p stock cubes (beef, chicken, veg) from Sainsbury's are fine.

we've seen £1 shops and 99p shops suddenly become very popular on the high street. Wonder when we'll get the first 50p shop?
CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. You can enjoy it even if you don't understand it and too much can give you a headache the next day J

  • Palmolive Shave Stick, 50p at Tesco. Much better than the more expensive stuff in a can and lasts for at least 30 shaves. Bargain!

We used to have a 50p or a £1 shop here - I'm talking 20 years ago now :rotfl: I used to love it, popped in most days for something or other. I've still got my round bread board (50p) which has never been used for any cutting, it's far too nice - I use it to put cheeses on as dessert alternative!

We also had a shop that sold literally just-out-of-date food, tins, cakes and biscuits, think it was a case of as long as they were clearly marked as such then it was ok to sell them? Not sure but it made a big difference to my extremely tight budget at the time. Now we've got Poundland, Savers and a CheapJacks shop all next door to each other, and the 99p shop a 2 minute walk away so it's very easy to shop frugally! :D

    I love Value stuff!!!
We always have biscuits, cookies, jaffa cakes, beetroot, silverskin onions, rice pud, custard, lemon curd, brillo's, sandwich bags, mushy peas, sweetcorn, tins of potatoes and probably plenty more.
Given how cheap some of these items are - I cannot understand why some people say they have no food in the cupboard!

I like Aldi chilli beans in chilli con carne but can't remember if they are 49p or 59p a tin.
