Staff discount cards being used for others without authorisation from head office?

If you're sure it's all above board then why not name the company? I think you know full well that it's fraud/theft.

If I steal your wallet and take out all the cash and give it to charity is that my act of kindness? Or am I a thief?

actually the cards may well have been used with the full knowledge of the management and head office....why should I name the supermarket at which I shop?....and if you were to find any cash in my wallet or purse, youre welcome to it.....with a hearty merry christmas to you!!!

That's not what you said originally.

Why don't you want to allow people to thank the company for their acts of Christmas kindness?

Your refusal to name the company makes it seem like you've just made this up.

    And I didn't say find - I said steal.

....this close to christmas you would be doing very well to FIND any money in my purse....but if you want to steal it .....your need is probably greater than mine.

This thread got me thinking, I should do more random acts of kindness all year round. But then now I have thought about it would they still be random?!

Instant dismissal when I worked for one of the big 4 sadly. We had 2 cards so one could be given to a family member, but I do know the supermarket beginning with A don't even allow anyone but the card holder to use it, even a spouse. My OH works in the retail sector and even if we're shopping together and he uses discount, he has to be the one to physically hand over the cash.

A lovely gesture and I'd hope that the cashier doesn't get caught. Sadly technology these days catches a lot of people out. Something as simple as a few of the cards being swiped 2 or 3 times in quick succession could flag that up at a higher level than the store.

My OH worked for the supermarket with the name beginning and ending in A - and I was the nominated additional card-holder. He retired after 20 years, and was thus able to keep his card for life. I notified them after he died - and I was told that I could keep his card for the rest of my life - and I've received a replacement card (after expiry date) 6 months ago.

On the point of "cute customers" it may well be that store management issued these cards to till operatives with the instruction that elderly regular customers should receive a discount. After all, till operatives would recognise their regular customers!
  • It would be an act of kindness if the cashier was giving discounts and putting her own money in the till instead. It is not the same when she is effectively giving away her employer's profits. She might as well pass them a pack of biscuits with a wink and say "go on, stick them in your pocket". The goods are not hers to give away!

Tenke that's a lovely thought. There's a homeless person in a nearby town who sits on the step to a disused office, for whom I buy a pastie and cuppa from the bakery when I'm shopping. He's always so grateful for something warm at this time of year. If I see a person who looks like they could do with a small gesture of kindness I'll do it and be blowed to the miseries who think I'm a mug.

Sparrer, thanks for sharing :) I have now definitely decided I will do it :T. Many times I have held back for the cynicism or mistrust that some people show, like we have seen here in the
thread, in the sense, that if you want to do something nice, they still " wonder why".. like being wary of someone's good intention just for the sake of doing something nice :o;)

But as you say if a person can do with a small gesture of kindness, then why not, it feels nice to do it anyway ;):j:j

Sorry I didn't realise they had 2 cards, on re-reading the article I had read again, it was the ladies daughter who had used it to get 2p off a smart price malt loaf and the lady in question was fired for gross misconduct. Apologies. :)

I often do this sort of thing.

To my shame these people were invisible but my ex is a psychiatric clinical nurse specialist and it she who pointed out that many homeless people have mental health issues and homelessness is only part of the problem. She used to buy food and a hot drink for those who looked in most need, she still does I'm sure.

I've done it ever since and will always do so.
