You seem very angered at my post Treevo....When I wrote it,I certainly did not expect to encounter such a vivid response....but I must therefore ask the question ...if you were the customer stood in front of me and the cashier had discounted your shopping by an additional 10% .....what would your reaction have been?.....
frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

    2017 toiletries challenge 179 out 145 in ...£18.64 spend

Not angered at all. Just curious as to why theft/fraud is considered an act of kindness rather than what it actually is.

I'd have asked why and then taken it from there. Seems the natural response.
  • Chances are that this was a regular couple that were 'known' to the cashier as they are perhaps in there at least once a week. Even in larger stores you get many regular & familiar faces.
I think the look on their faces say it all about it being an appreciated gesture.
    Back on the trains again!

Sadly it's true that in today's world, abusing the staff discount card would get you sacked no matter how well meant.

My neighbour's daughter was sacked for doing just that - helping out a friend of hers by swiping her own staff discount card so the friend would get the 10% off.

Unfortunately the manager saw her and she was sacked for gross misconduct.

Doesn't seem natural to me. Seems excessively mean-spirited and frankly quite odd.

I think most people would react like the OP and think it was sweet. Which it was. :)

Treevo.....There is nothing in my original post to suggest that any fraud has taken place....thats an assumpion you have made......

The supermarket concerned may well have sanctioned the practice on the saturday before christmas.....

Staff discount cards being used for others without authorisation from head office?

If you're sure it's all above board then why not name the company? I think you know full well that it's fraud/theft.

If I steal your wallet and take out all the cash and give it to charity is that my act of kindness? Or am I a thief?

There have been some very strange reactions to the OPs post.

I wonder who these people think should decide who deserves an act of kindness.

I for one think it was a lovely thing to do.

So it's excessively mean-spirited to ask why you've been given a discount?

As someone who's worked on checkouts before I'd be wary of allowing any staff to use their staff discount card for me as they'd be fired if found out. But then I think of others.
