I gave her cash and she bought a top and some stationery from Jack Wills.

I'm glad she got something she liked :).

At least you have an easy life for this years Christmas and Birthday ideas now as well :)

My DS started getting cash gifts around age 11 and that's all everyone gives him now he is 13. He is quite happy that he can stick the money in his savings and when he does find something he needs/really wants the money is there.

Agree that cash is good for teens. Am I alone in prefering vouchers now I am grown up? I find that if I am lucky enough to be given money as a gift I only spend it on the kids or on food shopping or something dull and practical. Whereas vouchers have more of a chance of being spent on something for me (although not always) Sucks to be a grown up somethimes :-)

I think when you're a teen, money is exciting as you don't tend to have a lot of your own.

As an adult, you have money - whether it's a lot or a little or hardly any - but the novelty has worn off, as you are much more aware of how much things cost. If I was given cash it would go in my account and probably end up paying for groceries. Give me a voucher and I feel I can spoil myself! Must be a grown up thing. ;)
' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".

I usually switch to giving cash when kids get to 8'ish - I try to start it off by taking the child shopping so they get time and a bit of money. I work on the basis that it is good for kids to have an understanding of money early on and the understanding that if you've got £20 then that's it and once it's gone, then it's gone.

I once spent about three hours with my twin godsons in small toy shop when they were probably 10 years old - they had money from me for their birthday's and for Christmas and had this fantastic negotiation exercise where they worked out how to pool their money to get the best value but whilst making sure that they both got what they wanted - they are now 18 and very sensible with money.

That sounds fab. Very trendy and she will have enjoyed choosing.

When my DD was given money or vouchers I saw this as 'giving' her the experience of being the decision maker - selecting style, quality, fashion and within a budget - and great fun.

I had the same opinion from start as others - perhaps your idea of suitable brand names and her idea are different.
Until you said Joules is one of them.
For 11 yr old????? Yes, he just picked first name that came into his head, quite possibly because these have been requested in past, it is not really teenager shop is it?

However I also picked up on the actual question - gifr card for number of venues, so it can be spent there if it really is the requirement, but also elsewhere if it wasn't such a specific requirement.

In past we got prepaid mastercard kind of voucher.. you charge it with cash and it can be used just like a card for payments of anything online or in store I think.
    Anywhere that accepts Mastercard.

My friend wanted to get one of these card for Christmas for his grandson but was advised that his son had to be 18 before he could purchased one of these cards.

I have a daughter who was 11 last Christmas and received a Jack Wills hoodie from my Mum, at my suggestion.

It was fairly expensive (£65), but remains a favourite and is likely to have one of the lowest cost per wears of all her clothing so far, by the end of its life.

Personally I feel items like this are far better than a £10 Primark top worn once or twice. Come to think of it, I bought her 3 sweaters/cardigans from Primark last October which totalled the same as that JW top. One is lovely, but two are shapeless and very poor quality (& only get worn in the house with pjs!)

Your granddaughter will be thrilled and you'll probably get sick of seeing that top!
