Expensive ideas for granddaughter

I asked my son for ideas for granddaughter's Christmas present and he suggested clothing vouchers, naming three brands which in my opinion are far too expensive to use for clothes for a growing girl. She is 11 so at the top end of the chidren's sizes.
So I am reluctant to settle on this idea.
I don't want to appear mean or old fashioned, but want to be sensible!

Anyone suggest other vouchers, which can be used at a range of stores or online, to give a bit more choice?

thing is, a lot of 11-year old girls are quite particular about what they want to wear (when mine gets any money she's straight off to New Look for example, but she's also mentioned Superdry before now - not that I've allowed her to buy anything full price from there), and maybe the stores your son has suggested to you are stores where your granddaughter would be able to put some of her christmas money to your vouchers, to get herself something special?

If you really don't want to get store vouchers for the shops your son has suggested, maybe you should call him and ask for more ideas?

Just get what amount you can afford for the posh shop, she can at least put it toward something, and also she might get some things in the sales.

The post office do a one for all voucher that can be used in a number of places.

Also - is there a local shopping centre, you can usually get a gift voucher that can be used in anystore in the centre.

yes, that could be a good idea if the shopping centre has a range of clothing stores your granddaughter could use.

Branded goods may be much-loved and worn continually, in which case a treat for Christmas and value for money.

And they may be able to be ebayed when they're outgrown, so again may not be such a waste.

    It's Christmas.
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.
  • As a Christmas treat, I'd say get her the vouchers. There might be something in particular that she wants to put the vouchers towards.

Also, there might be others getting her these vouchers as well, so she should have a nice stack to spend on treats from a shop that she really likes. Reasonably priced, cheaper clothes can be bought for the rest of the year! :)

And like a previous poster mentioned, there's always eBay once she's grown out of it!

Well this is what I was going to do.
Unfortunately she doesn't live near any shops for the three posh shops mentioned, so I guess it would have to be an online purchase. I have looked at their websites and cannot see anything much in her size.

She doesn't really have strong opinions as yet, but is influenced by her mum's choice. Her mum and I don't really get on all that well. I certainly don't want to cause any offence or look cheap-skate.
No doubt there will a shopping trip straight after Christmas so if it ends up being cash, so be it.
  • If you've asked what she wants, and that's it, then that's what you should give her.

I would give my daughters the same amount of money for clothes from when they went to big school. One bought everything at New Look or Primark and had loads of cheap clothes. The other preferred brand names and saved up and bought just a few items, but things she really wanted. And that was their choice, and both choices were fine as I spent the same amount either way and they had to live with the consequences of their own choices.

Surely the point of Christmas is to give someone the happiness of something they really wanted (within the bounds of your budget), not to inflict your own choices on them?

I'd be inclined to agree with previous posters. It would surprise you just how much an 11 year old girl could have an opinion on what she'd like to wear.

Give what you can afford for what she'd like, it'l be used then. No point in £20 worth of Primark vouchers laying in a drawer somewhere.
The frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.
