    Ooh! I wonder!

OP if the idea is repellent to you then tell your son you'd rather buy something other than clothes/vouchers and ask for a toy or book suggestion instead.

  • OP, why don't you offer to take your grandaughter shopping and buy her something lovely that she picks out for herself?
Surely the offer of a more memorable shopping trip out will be much better for your relationship and give her a chance to spend time alone with you? My daughter loves going to her nanas and they go out to lunch, then shopping. It always involves her coming back with bagfulls of lovely clothes.

I think you will be surprised at how small fitting some of the clothing in these shops are. My daughter is 12 1/2, is rather small and very slim and fits in to XS and S Hollister clothes. Im not sure what kind of woman would fit into them ;-).

I would go for vouchers for chosen shops or cash.

But if the OP won't buy from the shops the girl likes it would end in disaster!

Skintchick has completely hit the nail on the head with this one.

PS: OK, I admit it...this was a shameless attempt to worm my way into her sig....

Surely the point of Christmas is to give someone the happiness of something they really wanted (within the bounds of your budget), not to inflict your own choices on them?

That's not remotely the point of Christmas!

However, I do agree that if you ask, you shouldn't then take it upon yourself to judge the person's choice as inappropriate.

If you want to choose yourself, just don't ask and surprise them.

I live in a posh town and all the girls wear Joules, Jack Wills, Crew, White Stuff, etc. it's the new sloaney look.

I heard an amusing anecdote from a friend the other day when we were talking about teenagers and their 'uniforms'. He has two bus stops in his village with youngsters going to two 6th Form Colleges in opposite directions. He said you can tell which teens are going to which college (one of them is one of very best in the country) by what they're wearing. Very much Jack Wills country but no coats!:rotfl:

I would buy her what she wants, my son likes expensive clothes and I buy them at Christmas etc as that is what he wants.

I spend what I was going to spend budget wise he just gets less things, OH is the same whereas I have a mixture of expensive, supermarket and Primark depending on what I like at the time

I think Christmas is about getting what you want within reason when you are young, if one expensive t-shirt rather than 5 cheaper one makes them happy then so be it

I don't think it's just when you're young, either. My wife likes fancy makeup and beauty stuff...I hate buying her a couple of tiny tubs of something as her gift, it just doesn't seem like much stuff for the money...but it's what she wants, so I do it anyway...
