Apologies for boring question!

Hoping you can help please.
I said I’d help a friend choose a laptop so I’m here looking for some advice :o.

Max £500 - but I know she doesn’t to spend that much as her needs are very basic!
She doesn’t want refurbished – must be new
Lots of long document writing & reading (so I’m convinced laptop, rather than netbook or tablet)
Preferably Windows 7
Emails, some internet surfing etc
Watch iPlayer, listen to music, but no photo editing or game playing

Am I right in thinking decent brands are Acer, Lenovo, Samsung & Sony? After that, I'm a bit stuck:(
Could someone please point me in the right direction?

  • You can do those things on anything! Try Tesco or something. You get a good amount of club card points on something like that :)

I should think so too. You not only bored me but the rest of my family, neighbourhood and friends. That has to be the most boring question on this forum. Have you got any more :rotfl:

Absolutely any modern laptop will do those tasks with ease-no need to spend more than £400.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    Thanks for your input :)

You must be really bored (or boring :rotfl:) if the most interesting thing you can find to do is to reply as you have :T

    Fair enough

But some 'modern laptops' will be better value & more reliable than others?

Admittedly, she could just walk into Currys/PC World/Tesco (as suggested above) with £400 and come out with something that works.

But PC World/Currys/Tesco also sell cr*p - :(all I'm trying to do is help her avoid the cr*p :)

Buy one with a long warranty, min 2 years; they're still not as reliable as desktops.
  • if its a desktop you can build em for less then 100 quid these days that would do all that

notebooks can pick up cheap also for example BBC iPlaya runs by internet or app installed so most of what you want needs just a good ineternet connection

    writing: Microsoft word

even google these days ate selling notebooks with win7 or android for 150 quid a go

    hope that helps

Would like to see the specs of these 100 pound self built desktop.

If for prolonged periods of writing, a decent size screen will help. I know you say £500 but does that include anything for software. Try and go for something with i3 or i5 processor, 4gb memory.

If the person does require extended warranty, don't get it from the place of purchase. If bought on CC, they may have additional coverage or go for 3rd party warranty, can save anything between 1/3 to 1/2 price of the cost if bought from place of purchase.
Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j
