Would like to see the specs of these 100 pound self built desktop.
If for prolonged periods of writing, a decent size screen will help. I know you say £500 but does that include anything for software. Try and go for something with i3 or i5 processor, 4gb memory.
If the person does require extended warranty, don't get it from the place of purchase. If bought on CC, they may have additional coverage or go for 3rd party warranty, can save anything between 1/3 to 1/2 price of the cost if bought from place of purchase.
Ill try and dig out form my labourous collection of computer magazines the article link on how they built up some great machines using dabbs.com for parts or newegg.com ,
the op general purpose was to have a machine that was going to blow no whistles in the https://www.ultimategameskillingmachineawards in terms of not a gaming machines but something that would have a good standard process to run BBC apps (Which runs on flash anyway plug in)
You mentioned a I7 processor, That would i think be a bit too powerful I7 are for more gaming machines in my option I5 would a be a good value but lets consider non intel also Amd Ranges also, a good standard computer can run on 2GB for data entry applications its only 4-8 GB when its graphic entensive running on a good GPU card ect- Which Ms word aint i beleive as a clip art picture is less then 50kb
anyway ill find you that link neil

It was called being sarcastic, a machine with (legal copy) windows operating system for under £100, yeah right. (OP did say new as well, not ebay seconds) Case, psu, motherboard, processor, memory, hard drive, optical drive, keyboard, mouse. (monitor as well, OP did say laptop, so have to assume no current pc) And operating system
And i made no mention of i7.
As for stating 4gb, pointless getting a laptop with 2gb when for same price you can get 4gb. Plus the person may like to have more than 1 application open at the same time.Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0 -
skipping over whats already been said mostly, main things to consider (some have already been pointed out)
any modern latop will do what your asking about,
because of the above you really do not need to spend £500.
you have said no games, but just make sure, i am thinking the sims 3 can sometimes be a favourite that is not always seen as 'gaming' but actually requires a decent graphics chipset
if writing long documents the keyboard is key (excuse the pun) so if your buying online, DO NOT turn it on stright away, take it out of the packaging and 'test' the keyboard to see if they like it, if not you can send it back, unused for a full refund (some companies can be a pain and try saying that if its been turned on and gone through the set up process, the 7 day cooling off period doesnt then apply). otherwise go into one of the stores and try them out there if possibleDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0
