I'm also not saying you cannot create these characters using various codes input through your keypad, but they are not directly available on a UK keyboard by a special key or a combination of keys (such as shift + or alt +).
You're totally wrong. Use Alt Gr + vowel for Á, É, Í, Ó and Ú (including in lower case).

Yes I am ignorant of such threads. Perhaps you could point me in the direction of a couple.

Perhaps you could point me to a specific couple of threads or posts where you believe the absence of non English characters, accents, etc have caused an real issue?

^^ Been asked for twice now; response?

I am also (genuinely) interested in an answer to the above.
"Part P" is not, and has never been, an accredited electrical qualification. It is a Building Regulation. No one can be "Part P qualified."

The accented letters are all available via the standard keyboard.
It is true you have to press more than one key to get them, but then how many keys do you want on a laptop ... ;)

    Really?

Yes. Exactly as stated in the part of my post you quoted above ... :)

Depends on your definition of 'directly', perhaps, but I can go to any standard UK keyboard, sit down in front of it, and start typing accented letters.
That's direct enough for me. As NFH says, Alt Gr + vowel brings up the most commonly used accent in English writing, the acute accent.
That set-up was chosen because it is the most common.

The English language does not require any accents on letters, so I don't see the requirement for any of them on a forum that requires posts to be written in English.

Write in English and you won't ever have a problem.

e.g. what is wrong with the nice English word, platitude?

Do we have an English word for fianc!?

    I like that!

The problem is that fianc! has become such a part of English now that I can imagine someone saying "This is my betrothed" followed by blank looks and then "Oh, you mean your fianc!!".
