As for place names, there again are often English equivilent names (or if not I'm sure the lack of an accent will not confuse readers)

e.g. in Germany we have Köln, or Cologne as it is known in English.
We also have München, or Munich as it is known in English.

Furthermore, we also have an ezsett character (ß) in our alphabet, such as used in the word straße (street), but even in Germany today, that is often replaced with a doppel s (strasse). I'm sure there would be no confusion for any native English speaker.

If there were any real requirement for foreign characters in English, then why are they not available direct from an English keyboard? (like they are from other language keyboards?)

Yes I am ignorant of such threads. Perhaps you could point me in the direction of a couple. :cool:

I'm sure there are websites for the hotels & car hire firms. You won't find any accents or other non-english characters in any of those domain names

Perhaps you could point me to a specific couple of threads or posts where you believe the absence of non English characters, accents, etc have caused an real issue?

I'm sure you are well aware that they were simply examples.

I was attempting to give the thread a quick summary of the position in English as I saw it. (I am too lazy to type something that long out directly. ) And since we do not have the equivalent of L'Acad!mie française, I reckon I'm entitled to an opinion.

If you want a more humdrum example, how about Nestl!, producer of coffee, chocolate and fruit pastilles ...

or how to write words to indicate how they are pronounced (such as in a dictionary)

And I'm sure you know that the marks used generally in dictionaries to indicate pronunciation is not what was being referred to here.

The accented letters are all available via the standard keyboard.
It is true you have to press more than one key to get them, but then how many keys do you want on a laptop ...

What annoys more than anything is that MSE allows you to use the acute accent in its 'reply editor' and then 'filters' it out in the post added to the thread, replacing it by the exclamation mark.

Clearly this then requires you to go back into the post and replace the ! with the unaccented letter. If MSE is going to disallow any lower-case acute-accented letters (whilst allowing every other sort, including completely different alphabets :() then why couldn't it just remove the accent and leave the unaccented letter. That would remove the need to go back and edit the post. :mad:

Constraints of the forum software I think. vBulletin applies the word filter when the post is processed by the software once you click submit (or preview if you want to do that). Not before.

Also the word filter only has an option for a single replacement character for any filtered out. i.e. you can replace everything with a ! or * or # or whatever you so choose, but you can't have separate substitutions for different filtered phrases/characters as you suggested. The software just doesn't have that option.

Really? I've never seen these options on any UK keyboard I have ever used (both at work and at home)

None of these have a different number of keys.
And of course you can set up your computer to access these keyboard characters even if you don't actually have one of these keyboards (but that makes things complicated unless you are very familiar with a particular country's keyboard layout)

I'm also not saying you cannot create these characters using various codes input through your keypad, but they are not directly available on a UK keyboard by a special key or a combination of keys (such as shift + or alt +).
