What are you expecting this Christmas?

  • I'm hoping for lovely family Christmas with lots of good food, laughter and memories made.

I am hosting this year and there will be me, DH, Mum, Sister, 3 nieces & MIL & FIL.

What I am expecting is a fractious day where I am running ragged after everyone whilst Mum & Sister get slowly piddled and start to criticise or sly dig at me, and because MIL & FIL and nieces are there I will have to bit my tongue in order to preserve the atmosphere :)

We usually spend Christmas with DH family, but last year my sister had a big row with half of my Mum's family, which means that she would have been on their own had I not invited them and as I love my niece's dearly, I want them to have a special Christmas Day and for them to see how family gatherings should be (i.e. no fallouts!)

I am hoping that I am being totally paranoid and we all get along swimmingly though!

I'm expecing to have to wake DD's and DS (21, 19 and 16) up to open stockings and presents, my parents, Brother, Sil and nephew to arrive around 11:30 for more present opening and champagne and canapes (with my Mum saying "we don't need all of this, we won't eat our dinner" but unable to not eat any :) ).

I'm expecting dinner, planned for 2pm to be served about 2:40pm as the gas will not be as hot as normal and the potatoes won't be done. I am expecting us all expect my DH to go for a walk round the block while aforementioned DH clears away dinner bits so we can come back for Xmas pud and mince pies. I am expecting a lovely family evening of chat and games (very little TV on Xmas day) with yet more food making appearance (mother still saying "we can't possibly eat any more - then proceeding to do so :)) And when everyone finally goes home, kids have done their bits helping DH and I tidy up (ready for everyone to turn up again on Boxing Day) DH and I will sit down with a port or brandy.

I'm expecting to be up early and really tired as I will hardly have had any sleep because I'm working Christmas eve.
I'm expecting to be too tired to prep veg etc (like I normally do on christmas eve)
I'm expecting to be cooking Christmas dinner - with no help at all-as usual. Apart from youngest DD wants to help with the table. I expect older DDs will not want to do anything as usual-so to avoid an argument on Christmas Day I'll just get on with it. :(
I'm expecting no visitors as family either live too far away or are too busy to call in.
I'm expecting nothing happening on boxing day because I'm working and the day after. I'm also expecting not to be able to visit very close relatives until january-because I don't get any decent time off 'til then.

I am expecting a truly wonderful and totally indulgent christmas. This year on Xmas day and Boxing day it is just me and my two little boys. We will get up when we are ready and follow traditions that I love on Xmas day. Not have to fit into anyone elses rules or ideals. Eat what we enjoy at times that suit us.

My dad and overbearing step mother are off to a noisy, chaotic Xmas at my step sisters. I have no doubt she will try to take over as usual and have them all doing things her way. It will all end in tears

I dont get out of it completely as we are visiting theirs on the 28th for a couple of nights. They want to lay on a full blown Xmas meal, pressies etc. For the first time in a long time though I can have Xmas my way in the comfort of my own home and love every minute of it. Bliss.
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.
  • I'm expecting to feel slightly teary as it's the first year without my ex. I'm also expecting to feel a wonderful sense of relief that I won't have to spend the day biting my tongue, or thinking 'We can't carry on like this for much longer,' as I have done for the last 3 years or so.
I'm expecting my two girls (19 and 15) to feel slightly sad that their dad isn't around ( he's decided he's not 'doing' Christmas this year) but still having a great day, and enjoying opening all the presents I've still managed to buy. I'm HOPING they'll appreciate all the effort I've gone to, but I'm not holding out much hope.
I'm half expecting my MIL and FIL to cancel their plans to come over at the last minute as she won't be feeling up to it.
I'm expecting my wonderful Mum to cook me, the girls, my sister and BIL, and my nephew and niece a lovely Christmas dinner (with mine and sister's help) and to have a wonderful few hours playing with them all.
I'm expecting the evening to be quite a let down as sister and her family will rush off to her in laws, eldest DD will drive over and see her boyfriend, in laws ( if they've appeared) will go home and it'll be just me, Mum and youngest mooching around...
I'm expecting Boxing Day morning to be spent sleeping, maybe a walk in the park, youngest may well see her Dad, eldest is working, so it may be just me and Mum here. I love my family very much, but sometimes hate sharing my sister with her in laws who are a much bigger family who she lives nearby. I miss her...
  • I'm expecting a massive tantrum from hubby's deceased wife's family in the next week or so as this is the first year he has decided not to visit them or her grave with them on Christmas Day. He is going on Christmas Eve instead but it is going to cause such a hullabaloo :(

On a good note I'm expecting to be able to sit and open our gifts with a glass of fizzy on Christmas morning as neither of us are driving this year :j

I am also expecting a manic Christmas Day as we are having 12 people for lunch
Never look down on anyone unless you are bending to help them up.....

I'm expecting lunch to be fairly chaotic what with trying the fit 6 of us round a tressle table in the front room. I'm expecting to be eating with my chin on the table as I'll have one of the camping chairs :rotfl: I'm half expecting the tressle table to collapse at some point. I'm expecting DH to moan that there's too many people even though he'd moan if they weren't there.

In the evening I'm expecting my mum to tell us exactly how much every item of clothes/jewellery she's wearing cost. I'm expecting my SIL to not like any of the drinks/food on offer. I'm expecting the kids to take themselves off upstairs to play with guitars. I'm expecting DH to absent himself to go off after them as soon as he feasibly can. I'm expecting DH to keep asking me when they're all going home.

After they're all gone I'm expecting to put my feet up to watch series 3 of Boardwalk Empire as I'm expecting it as a Christmas present!

I'm expecting...a baby. Well my family are! I'm only actually due on 13th Jan but my bump's dropped down and my whole family are convinced I'll be early.

If i don't go into labour (which I won't - I'm not missing my christmas dinner for anything), DS will jump on the bed at approximately 5.30am to ask if we can go downstairs to "see if he's been" whilst the teen sulks at having to get up before midday. Presents will be opened and chocolate will be eaten for breakfast.

Hubby dearest will cook us a gorgeous meal and I plan to stuff myself stupid (but not indulge in pate or wine:().

Awwwww best of luck. I was also due on the 13th Jan but my son had other ideas and arrived 23 December instead. Best early xmas pressie ever. Cant believe he is 10 next week :D

I'm expecting to start Christmas day on Christmas eve and am expecting to have lots of fun in the kitchen preparing dinner while listening to christmas music (mostly crooners). I'm expecting lots of shouting and swearing from DH as he's decided to move the sofa out of the living room while we eat (we don't have a dining room)

I'm expecting parents in law and BIL to arrive and say lots of lovely things about my food and how nice it was that they didn't have to cook (even though I tell them I love doing it)

I'm expecting to have a very modest dinner portion (in the full knowledge that I'll be shoving loads of left overs down my neck when everyone's gone home)

I'm expecting DH to wake up at the crack of dawn on Christmas morning and to bring me loads of presents in bed before I've even touched my coffee, before I drop him off at work for the day

I'm expecting a phone call from my Sister, who will tell me how busy she's been and the naughty things her children have been up to that day

I'm expecting my father to come round for about half an hour, with his wife, who will turn her nose up at everything I offer her to drink/eat

I'm expecting to spend the rest of the day with Disney, or whatever else I can find to watch, with lots of bubble and squeek and hot chocolate...successful Christmas all in all!
