Can I refer you all to this thread which has discussed much of these topics previously.

Too late old chap, the can of worms (McWorms?) has been opened and there's no way to get them back into Pandora's Box now.

Lovely girl Pandora. Shame about the box though.

It's very funny seeing the unionist arguments against an independant Scotland at the same time when they are against being part of the EU ;o)
It's also hilarious thinking of the Scots breaking away from the hated Westminster, 400 miles away etc, and then finding that Brussels pulls all the strings and Westminster was only the errand boy.

In the same interview where Barroso said Scotland would have to reapply, he was also talking about deepening European structures etc. Then Nicola Sturgeon came on and talked about Scottish self-determination.

The relevant discussion here seems to be around the horse trading that will go on between Scottish MPs and the EU / Nato etc , to work out how all this separation will work in practise.

It's clear they will have to fudge some kind of solution. That's the nature of politics, principles have to give away to pragmatism at some point.

From a PR viewpoint it doesnt look too good with the EU saying one thing and Nicola Sturgeon saying something else. Perhaps they should keep some of this behind closed doors until they can announce something more solid.

No big deal, mind. 10 % of Germany's oil and about 25% of Spain's fish, plus coal, gas, uranium (nobody remembers this out loud), 1/12 of the world's laptops etc, 5 of the top universities and one of the world's top four per-capita producers of cited scientific papers.

I honestly doubt the oil and spains fish will be enough for Scotland to make demands. The other stuff is neither here nor there.

I'm honestly wondering why Scotland feels it has such bargaining power within the EU. If that's the list, then, to be honest, it's not much in the grand scale of things....is it!

The Scots have this fantasy that they'll be a rich country. To hear them talk, you'd think they were going to be a net contributor to the EU budget, instead of joining the queue with the begging bowl.

Well it's an interesting concept that as Spain fishes in Scotlands waters, Scotland will be embraced into the EU and Scotland will pull the strings.

Spain is just ONE country in the EU. Others in the EU are narked about Spains deal on fishing....the French I think?? So they would be quite happy to see the back of Scottish waters for fishing purposes. italy probably wouldn't give two hoots about scottish waters and spains fishing.

It's something Scotland has to offer, but it's an insignificance to the majority in the EU. Some in the EU already want the UK out of it...so again, this endagers Scotlands self determination to do things Scotlands way.

They may go down another route, but then what currency will they have? It won't be the Euro....so they would just keep the pound and the Bank of England!? And what about EU citizenships? Again, all we get from the SNP is that everyone else is lying.

Theres so many questions. All we hear out of Scotland is a load of waffle about how Scotland CAN do it's own thing and two fingers up to everyone else. It seems the debate has far more air time in Scotland, so I don't know if answers are given to real questions there, but, if Question Time in Scotland was anything to go by, it seems many Scot's can't get answers either and the SNP just keep re-itterating (while spending money in a cover up) that they will do things for Scotland, within Scotland.

With the EU? Meh, prolly rather less. There are 5,000,000 Scots and nobody except perhaps rugby fans is even really certain of where Scotland is.

Thanked for your tongue in cheek, but I can assure you, as a well travelled Scot, everywhere seems to know of Scotland and where it is.

Indeed, when locals find out we are from Scotland and not England, we receive an extra heart warmingly welcome :p

You may recall that the G8 leaders managed to find their way to Auchterarder in Scotland for the G8 cummit in 2005.

    Indeed, I'm messing with you.

When I've lived abroad (not Aus) I've regularly claimed to be Scottish rather than English to make life easier. The English are widely despised, the Scots seem to be loved, I guess for disliking the English and more importantly not being English (I stereotype here).

I do recall. Most importantly could they pronounce it? Gaelic spelling (Scots or Irish) seems to be an in-joke at the expense of the rest of the English speaking world:D

Good job it was easier than Auchtermuchty, Aberchirder (known locally as Foggieloan or Foggie) or Drumnadrochit

Indeed so. I would guess that there'd be limos stuck out on the Highlands to this day with various Under-Secretaries and Junior-Aides Deputy Assistants living off beer nuts and GnTs to this day having been given verbal instructions only.

You'll be glad to hear I never attempted the accent. I'd talk in a very South London voice and claim to be from Scotland. Ooh, probably Edinburgh or something. It fooled the French and the Irish generally wanted to be friendly so were happy enough with the claim of non-Englishness.
