But if you do this and have an MSE head on your shoulders, your social chatter will diminish rapidly. You'll end up worrying about pennies rather than minutes.

Not always the case as it depends on your usage patterns. Most people I know who have contracts pay well over the odds .

Time spent texting is rarely productive. I'll just have to spend more time on here instead...

Perhaps I should have been clearer - my contract is all of £7.50pm, but I am lucky to use 1hrs worth of minutes (ex 250) pm because the phone and network as so unreliable.

What I don't understand with phone companies etc...

In an age where technology is CONSTANTLY getting better surely the cost should come down based on what they've learnt and have put in place? Instead you get stung constantly with a price hike.

A friend of mine worked for o2 and she was able to see how much I 'cost' them as a customer and it was very little, in fact most of my bill was considered 'profit' to the company.

Compare a phone of today with one made 10 years ago. Compare the data speeds you can get today with what you would have got 10 years ago.

The phone manufacturers and service providers are constantly having to spend money just to keep up with their competitors.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

How many billions will they need to spend on 4G licences?

It would be nice if they would increase the 3G coverage first as most current phones don't do 4G yet.

More power for the fire, this is currently being reviewed, and most have done these rises - Voda, Orange and now o2's blatant "you cannot cancel" just push the review in consumers favour LOL

    http://media.ofcom.org.uk/2012/10/18/addressing-consumer-concerns-over-mid-contract-price-rises/

    A useful link. Thank you.

Particularly interesting quote: "Under current Ofcom rules communications providers are required to give customers a minimum of one month’s notice of any change to their contractual terms that is likely to be of material detriment and customers must be able to withdraw from their contract penalty-free following such notice (General Condition 9.6)."

Does this mean that, if providers put their prices up in the middle of a fixed-length contract, that customers' threat to leave now has more weight because they can do so for free?

    Or cheaper option

    Sim only

Forget the shiny Iphone dangled on a carrot with your contract how i started for 2 years have now unlinited text mins and web (voda red) and free local numbers and 0870 0800 ect, 22 quid a month...Fixed till aug 2013

Yes but the point of this is that there is no such thing as "fixed" as the operator can still put up the prices.
