Why not? You have the price in writing or durable form and therefore is sounds like 'lose of a bargain'.

How can it be loss of bargain when the OP hasn't paid anything? Prices go up. That's a fact. If you haven't bought anything or paid for anything, then you can't have lost anything.

    you agree a price

And that's not what has happened here. No price has been agreed as no offer was made by the OP.

  • Thanks to everyone for there comments, even the condescending ones! My original point was not that anything illegal had taken place, not that Argos had broken a contract, failed to honour an agreement, or anything else mentioned. Just that it was awful customer service, which I still believe to be the case. Carphone Warehouse, took the order, beat the price, offered free delivery in two days, took payment, job done. I call that good service.

Argos shouldn't have put the price on the email & a price has been agreed - it's on the email and T&C's can't over ride it.

Maybe an email to consumer direct about false advertising. Tesco's have been done for this scam recently. Advertising one price but the stores haven't got the item at that advertised price.

But no contract has been formed - Argos do not hold reserved items indefinitely for customers; were a contract formed then customers who reserve and then do not turn up to collect, for whatever reason, could be obliged to pay for the item. Or Argos COULD debit the customer's bank account at the point of reserving. But they don't.

Argos are not obliged to sell a reserved item at the advertised price any more than the customer is obliged to pay for a reserved item.

The reserve and collect is a service offered by Argos so that the customer need not trail into the store to be told 'Sorry; sold out'.

If this was true and the contract had been agreed at the price. Then the customer would also have to buy the item.

We've all reserved something from Argos then not picked it up.

It's a reserve service, the price is the price they tell you when you go to pay

I have a quotation in writing from a local builder.... yet a contract hasn't yet been formed between us both.
And I'm sure that those of us with limited brain cells would be extremely grateful that they had reserved the items for us.

I wouldn't be grateful. It's just a way for them to get your money over their competitors.

Just had a look at a recent Argos - Thank you for your Reservation email.
It has Total price and no mention that the price is subject to change.

No, but this is mentioned in the T&C's which are available on the website and should be read before making a reservation.

But I do not think I would be so happy if I had done the 38 mile round trip and then found out it had gone up by so much.
They could have graciously informed me of the change in price by the same means as they had informed me that the item has been reserved.

Alternatively, you could have checked the price online prior to doing the 38 mile round trip. Or checked the offer end date. Either of these options would have prepared you for the increase in price.
